No. 12 Men’s Tennis to Host Georgia and UTA for Sunday Doubleheader
Mar 16, 2024 | Men's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 12 Texas A&M men's tennis team hosts Georgia and UTA Sunday, March 17 at the Mitchell Tennis Center with first serves set for 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
"We enter our match on Sunday with mixed emotions as we say farewell to one of the true legends and hall of famers of our sport in Coach Manuel Diaz," head coach Steve Denton said. "In the SEC and nationally, he is our Nick Saban. The standard of the SEC for many years has run through Georgia. It has been my honor to share the court on so many memorable occasions against his teams. College tennis will certainly miss Manny's presence on and off the court. With regard to our matches, we will have to be ready to fight a very well coached team that we barely beat a couple of months ago in Athens during the ITA Kickoff Weekend. It will be very interesting to me to see how much better our two teams have gotten since late January. Whenever we get together, it is always a hotly contested match. Our doubleheader match tomorrow presents a very difficult match for the depth of our squad. These guys are battle tested and we will need to be ready for a long day of tennis tomorrow that will test our mental strength and stamina severly."
The Aggies (15-4, 4-1 SEC) are coming off an upset victory over No. 8 Tennessee. The Maroon & White defeated the Volunteers, 5-2, to extend their conference play win streak to four. The match was highlighted by three ranked victories, No. 58 Giulio Perego/Togan Tokac took down No. 4 Angel Diaz/Johannus Monday. No. 64 JC Roddick made quick work of No. 23 Shunsuke Mitsui, giving Roddick his second top-25 triumph of the week. Freshman Tiago Pires earned the last ranked win of the contest and clinched the match for the Aggies with a victory over No. 94 Filip Pieczonka.
A&M defeated the Bulldogs (7-8, 1-3 SEC), 4-2, during ITA Kickoff Weekend, which punched the Aggies' ticket to compete in the 2024 ITA National Indoor Championships. Georgia is coming off a loss to No. 9 Texas, 4-3. The Maroon & White will take on the Bulldogs in the 1 p.m. contest.
The Aggies won the last match against the Mavericks, 4-0, in Aggieland during the 2022-23 campaign. The Maroon & White are 7-0 in the all-time series against UTA. The Mavericks are 6-6 on the season with its last win coming against NJIT.
