BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M soccer team started the spring schedule with wins over Dallas Baptist (2-1) and Houston (3-0) in Sunday's 60-minute matches at Ellis Field.
A trio of Aggie transfers combined for two goals and three assists. Shae O'Rourke tallied one goal and two assists while Kennedy Clark scored a penalty kick goal and Leah Pirro added an assist. Maroon & White offensive contributions also included two goals from Mia Pante, one goal by Macy Matula and an assist from MaKhiya McDonald.
In the 120 minutes of action, Texas A&M owned a 27-10 edge in shots, including 13-3 in shots-on-goal. The corner kick tally for the day was 7-3 in favor of the Maroon & White.
Against DBU, the Patriots pounced on the Aggies with a goal in the 11th minute. Texas A&M tied the match with 9:27 remaining in the first half when Clark drew a foul in the penalty box and converted on the penalty kick.
Andersen Williams came a cat's whisker away from scoring the go-ahead goal on two occasions. Late in the first half, she hit the post on a shot from 15 yards and with 11 minutes left in the match she sent in a rocket from 12 yards that required a diving save by the DBU netminder. Texas A&M eventually prevailed when Matula poked in a rebound off the crossbar on a 20-yard free kick by Pirro.
The Aggies scored all three goals against Houston in the first half. In the fifth minute, O'Rourke powered through a pair of Cougar defenders entering the penalty box and slipped a pass to Pante charging down the left channel. Pante dribbled twice before driving a shot passed the keeper from 10 yards. In the 23rd minute, O'Rourke crossed over a defender as she charged into the penalty box and then beat the keeper 1-on-1 to double the A&M lead. The final goal featured McDonald working the ball to the end line to the right of the 6-yard box before slipping a pass to O'Rourke who sent a one-touch offering to Pante for the chip in.
Texas A&M returns to action Saturday, March 23 when the Maroon & White travel to Waco for 60-minute matches against Baylor (1 p.m) and UIW (2:45 p.m.).
