Apr 15, 2024 | Baseball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Fresh off its fifth sweep of the 2024 season, the top-ranked Texas A&M baseball team (32-4) concludes its five-game homestand with a midweek battle against Air Force (15-19) Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Tuesday's contest will be streamed on SEC Network+ and can also be heard locally on SportsRadio 1150AM/93.7 The Zone. Fans can also follow along with the games on X, @AggieBaseball.
After recording its first sweep of a Top 10 opponent since 2016, the Aggies checked in at No. 1 across all five major polls on Monday. The No. 1 ranking marks the Maroon & White's first since the 2016 campaign. Texas A&M's 32-4 record tops the nation and is the best start in program history since 2015.
Tuesday's midweek against the Falcons marks the third meeting all-time between the two clubs and the first since 1972. The Aggies claimed both neutral site meetings in 1972 by a combined score of 7-0.
Under first year pitching coach Max Weiner, the Texas A&M pitching staff has lowered its ERA from a season ago by over two runs. The Aggies currently rank first in shutouts (8), second in ERA (3.14), second in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.8), second in strikeouts per nine (11.8), fourth in WHIP (1.15), seventh in hits allowed per nine (7.2) and eighth in walks allowed per nine (3.11). The eight shutouts are the most since the 2016 campaign.
The Maroon & White will send RHP Weston Moss to the mound Tuesday afternoon. The midweek start will mark the first of the freshman's career.
Offensively, the Aggies rank second in walks (245), eighth in homers (73), ninth in homers per game (2.03), ninth in slugging percentage (.568), 11th in on-base percentage (.434), 14th in runs scored (323) and 19th in scoring (9.0).
The Aggies have arguably the best 1-2-3 lineup punch in all of college baseball in Gavin Grahovac, Jace LaViolette and Braden Montgomery. The trio has combined for 141 of the Aggies 305 RBI on the year.
Entering the week, Montgomery ranks first nationally in RBI (58), third in homers (19), third in total bases (122) and fourth in slugging percentage (.891). LaViolette currently sits sixth nationally in runs scored with 52 and seventh in homers with 16. Among the SEC the sophomore ranks second in walks (35), 10th in slugging percentage (.765) and eighth in total bases (101). Grahovac, who was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, has turned in a stellar rookie campaign thus far, ranking 11th in the SEC in RBI with 42.
