May 09, 2024 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 13 Texas A&M women's tennis team is set to face the defending National Champions, No. 4 North Carolina, in the NCAA Super Regional round Friday, May 10, at the Chewning Tennis Center with first serve set for 5 p.m.
The Aggies (24-7) swept both of their opponents in the Regional Championships and are looking to advance to their third-consecutive Elite 8. Texas A&M is led by the No. 1 singles player in the nation, Mary Stoiana, who has topped the rankings all season and is on a nine-match win streak. Stoiana and Mia Kupres pair to make the No. 7 duos team in the country and are coming off their 14th-ranked victory of the season over Oklahoma's No. 26 Roisin Gilheany/Dana Guzman in round two.
The Maroon & White have dominated the Super Regionals in their previous two seasons, only allowing one point in their victories (4-0, 4-1). Stoiana specifically stood out, as she bested both opponents in previous years, dropping only five games in dual match singles play across two matches.
The last time A&M and North Carolina (24-3) met was in the 2023 ITA Indoor Championship semifinals. The match went down-to-the-wire, but the Aggies were outlasted by the eventual champions, 4-2. The Tar Heels head into the match having won 11 straight and are 14-0 at home this season.
