
Ennis Wins Arizona Amateur Championship

Incoming freshman earns U.S. Amateur spot.
PHOENIX – Incoming freshman Wheaton Ennis of the Texas A&M men's golf team claimed the 100th Arizona Amateur Championship with a 3&2 victory over Carl Miltun in Saturday afternoon's final match at Phoenix Country Club.
By winning the Arizona Amateur, Ennis also gained an exemption into the 2024 U.S. Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, August 12-18.
In the championship match, Ennis never trailed. He nosed ahead 2UP with a birdie on the par-4 No. 4 and a par on the par-4 No. 5. He stretched the lead to 3UP at No. 11 when Miltun bogeyed the par-4 hole.
Miltun pulled to one back on No. 12, but Ennis responded immediately with a birdie on the par-3 No. 13 and matched Miltun stroke for stroke on the next three holes to seal the championship.
Ennis cruised through the two rounds of stroke play Monday and Tuesday to qualify for the match play. He fired a pair of 5-under 65s to earn the No. 1 seed.
The Eagle, Idaho, native dispatched of Greg Cesarek (5&3) and Hans Reimers (5&4) to move into the Round of 16 where the matches intensified.
Ennis topped Richard Hearden, 2&1, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. He needed to 19 holes to get by Warner Beach in Friday morning's quarters and closed out the day with a 2&1 decision over Jake Chanen to move onto the championship duel.
Ennis, who arrives in Aggieland for the upcoming fall campaign, is slotted at No. 4 on the Rolex AJGA Rankings and most recently posted a runner-up finish at the AJGA Thunderbird Heather Farr Classic as well as participating in the Sunnehanna Amateur.
