BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M's Debora Cherono, Cooper Cawthra and Jaiya Covington broke school records on the final day of the Ted Nelson Invitational Saturday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility.
The Aggies had another record-breaking showing in their third meet of the season, as they downed three school records, logged 10 event wins, recorded seven all-time marks and 28 personal bests in a dominant performance in front of the 12th Man.
Setting the tone for the day was newcomer Cherono in the women's mile. In only her second meet representing the Maroon & White, she broke a 10-year-old school record held by Hillary Montgomery, as she crossed the line in 4:40.94 on the way to her first collegiate victory.
Following suit in the men's mile was Cawthra, as the senior claimed the second school record of the day surpassing his own mark at the top of the history books with a time of 3:58.19 to claim his second victory of the season.
Covington opened her season with a bang, as the junior finished as the top collegiate in the women's 60m hurdles final in a record-breaking time of 8.01. Her mark snatched the top spot of the history books from Kaylah Robinson who set the time at the NCAA Championships in 2022.
Staying dominant on the track, Auhmad Robinson added another win to his indoor campaign in the 200m. The Spring, Texas, native brought it home in 20.57 which was good for No. 3 on the A&M all-time performers list.
Heather Abadie secured the opening win in the field, taking home her first pole vault title of the season with a clearance of 4.23m/13-10.5. Gavin Champ held the momentum with his second triple jump crown of the season, winning the event with a leap of 15.74m/51-7.75.
Other winners on the oval included Kimar Farquharson in 800m, crossing the line in 1:48.73. The Aggies also added a pair of wins in the 3,000m, as Jack Johnston won the men's invitational event in a personal-best time of 8:15.05, while Kristen McHugh secured the first win of her collegiate career in the open event with a lifetime-best mark of 10:15.51.
The men closed the meet going two-for-two in the relays, winning both the DMR and 4x400m. Kickstarting the momentum was the DMR group consisting of Cawthra, Blake Harris, Luca Santorum and Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles who crossed the line in 9:47.22, while the 4x400m quartet of Cutler Zamzow, Hossam Hatib, Robinson and Farquharson won the event in 3:06.15.
