Feb 01, 2025 | Track and Field
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M's Cooper Cawthra, Jaiya Covington and Aleksandr Solovev broke school records Saturday to cap off dominant showings at both the New Mexico Team Open and John Thomas Terrier Classic.
The Maroon & White doubled down on standout showings, as they downed three school records, won seven events, logged 10 all-time marks and secured 15 personal-best performances on the final days of competition in Albuquerque and Boston.
Covington, the reigning SEC Women's Runner of the Week, kickstarted the record-breaking day on the track as she lowered her own school record in the 60m hurdles for the second-straight week. The junior crossed the line in 8.00 in Albuquerque to finish as the top collegiate, one week after clocking 8.01 at the Ted Nelson Invitational. Covington now boasts the top-two times in the nation this year and ranks 14th in the world in 2025.
Taking a trip to the east coast, Cawthra battled in what was one of the best indoor mile events in history as he downed his own school record in back-to-back weeks. The senior crossed the line in a staggering 3:54.38 which was over three-seconds faster than his previous best which he set last week at the Ted Nelson Invitational of 3:58.19. Diego Heredia and Gilbert Rono also ran all-time bests, as the pair now rank eighth (4:02.18) and ninth (4:02.52), respectively, on the A&M all-time performers list.
The final school record of the day came in the field, as Aleksandr Solovev recaptured the national lead in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 5.80m/19-0.25. The Moscow, Russia, native's mark improved upon his previous record of 5.74m/18-10 which he set at the Corky Classic. Solovev placed second in the event, as he battled with three-time NCAA Champion and Olympic finalist Sondre Guttormsen, pushing him all the way to the conclusion of the event.
Heather Abadie won the first event of the day, as the senior captured her second-straight pole vault title with a season-best mark of 4.30m/14-1.25. The mark helps her climb into the top-20 nationally in the event this season.
Gavin Champ kept the Aggies dominant in the field, winning the men's triple jump with a career-best performance. Champ leaped over 16m for the first time, as he recorded a mark of 16.13m/52-11 on his first attempt which moved him up four spots on the A&M all-time list to No. 8. Jaydon Shield also placed second in the event with a personal-best mark of 15.24m/50-0. Winny Bii ensured the clean sweep of the triple jump titles, as she leaped a career best 13.92m/45-8 to climb four places on the all-time list to hold the No. 2 slot.
Ja'Qualon Scott took the Maroon & White's momentum to the track in the 60m hurdles, winning the event with a season-best time of 7.59, which was just shy of his own school record.
Continuing their national dominance was the men's 400m group, as they claimed four of the top-eight finishers in the event including a sweep of the podium spots. Auhmad Robinson paced the group in his season opener in the event with a mark of 45.40. Hossam Hatib was right behind in second, as he ran a personal-best time of 45.80 which debuted him at No. 11 on the all-time list. Kimar Farquharson concluded the podium finishes in third with a career best 45.92, while Cutler Zamzow rounded out the group with a best mark of 46.40 for sixth.
Capping off the meet in New Mexico were the 4x400m relay teams, as the men's A relay group consisting of Robinson, Zamzow, Farquharson and Hatib crossed the line in 3:07.09 to win the event, while the B relay group also secured a podium spot with Bryce McCray, DeMarco Escobar, Scott and Grant Ashby placing third in 3:08.64. On the women's side, the quartet of Camryn Dickson, Latasha Smith, Jasmine Montgomery and Kennedy Wade closed the meet on top in 3:37.08.
Concluding the meet in Boston were the men in the 5,000m, as Jack Johnston and Jonathan Chung also both ran all-time marks. Johnston recorded a time of 13.56.60 to move into fifth in A&M history, while Chung logged a time of 14:05.52 to move into sixth.
