Women's Basketball Maroons Islanders in Season Opener, 81-43

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Dominating defense propelled the Texas A&M women's basketball team to an 81-43 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Wednesday's season opener inside Reed Arena.
The Aggies recorded 21 steals and held the Islanders to 14-of-41 (34.1%) shooting for the night. Texas A&M outscored the visitors 34-6 over a 12-minute span during the second and third quarters to take command.
Ny'Ceara Pryor stuffed the stat sheet and flirted with a quadruple-double with game-highs with 16 points, eight assists and eight steals to go with six boards. She was the first Aggie with more than seven steals in a game since Curtyce Knox snagged seven against Abilene Christian on November 26, 2016.
Fatmata Janneh registered her 28th career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lemyah Hylton chipped in with 14 points, four steals and three assists. Janae Kent recorded career highs with eight rebounds and four assists to go with 11 points.
The Aggies used seven steals to build a 17-13 advantage after one quarter. Janneh powered A&M with seven points, shooting 3-of-4 from the field. The Maroon & White led by as many as 11 points in the stanza.
Texas A&M rode a 14-0 run over a 2:00 span to stretch its edge to 38-18 with 1:54 left in the first half. The Aggies used smothering defense to hold the Islanders to 2-of-10 from the floor. Kent led the Maroon & White with eight points in the quarter, hitting both her 3-point shots. The Aggies win the half time with a 42-20 lead.
The Aggies outscored A&M-Corpus Christi 22-8 in the third quarter to pull ahead 64-28. The islanders went the first 7:38 without a field goal. Hylton hit a pair of shots from long range as she scored eight points in the period.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cut the deficit to 67-38 with 4:24 left in the contest, but the Aggies closed the contest on a 14-5 surge to hold the Islanders at bay.
The Aggies return to the hardwood Thursday, Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. in their annual elementary school day game. They take on Tarleton as they look to open the year 2-0.
