No. 7 Texas A&M Surges Past Utah State, Purdue on Opening Day

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 7 Texas A&M softball team surged past Utah State, 11-5, with an eight-run sixth inning in the season opener, followed by a 10-2 run-rule victory over Purdue on opening day at Davis Diamond Thursday night.
The two Aggie squads exchanged blows early in the game as the opening frame was knotted at one. Kramer Eschete kept the Utah State (0-2) attack at bay with an ESPN top 10 catch as the left fielder beelined towards foul territory crashing into the wall making a catch worth nearly two outs. Texas A&M (2-0) found itself behind the eight ball on two more occasions before Eschete evened the score with a two RBI triple and scoring off a single to deliver the 12th Man their first lead, 6-5, with one out in the sixth. A couple batters later, Mac Barbara began the trio of haymakers as Ol' Sarge's charges went back-to-back-to-back courtesy of Barbara leaving a dent on the videoboard column, Mya Perez blasting a moonshot to left center and Allie Enright with a bell ringer to right field as the Fightin' Texas Aggies led 11-5. Sidne Peters sat the opposition down in order in the final frame to secure A&M's first win of the season.
Momentum carried into the night cap as the Aggies plated 10 runs in the opening three frames, while All-American Emiley Kennedy held Purdue (0-1) hitless through 3.1 innings. The Boilermakers mustered an attempt out of run-rule territory with a run in the fourth and fifth innings before Texas A&M extinguished the light at the end of the tunnel ending the night in five innings, 10-2.

B2 | Frankie Vrazel roped the first pitch of the inning to left field for a single and was followed up by a Kramer Eschete single through the right side. - Texas A&M poured on eight runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to back-to-back-to-back home runs from Mac Barbara, Mya Perez and Allie Enright. It marked the Aggies first time to hit three consecutive dingers since Trinity Cannon, Allie Enright and Rylen Wiggins did so against North Dakota State in a 10-0 win on Feb. 24, 2024.
- True freshmen Harley Vestal, KK Dement, Kelsey Mathis and Frankie Vrazel made their collegiate debuts, while 20 Aggies saw the field tonight.
- The Aggies are 38-5 in season openers since 1983, including winners in the last 13.
- Emiley Kennedy earned win No. 50 of her career, while going the distance for the 34th time of her career. Lefty finished the night with 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER 1 BB and 8 K.
- Mya Perez and Mac Barbara combined to drive in 13 of the team's 19 RBI. Perez finished the night 4-for-5, 8 RBI, 1 HR, while Barbara went 2-for-4, 5 RBI, 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 BB.
- Emily Leavitt provided 2.2 scoreless innings of work in game one to keep the Aggies within striking distance and she finished allowing only three hits and striking out two batters.
