Covington Captures 100m Hurdles National Lead on Final Day of Battle on the Bayou

BATON ROUGE – Texas A&M Track & Field's Jaiya Covington captured the national lead in the 100m hurdles following a personal-best performance Saturday on the final day of the Battle on the Bayou.
Following her indoor 60m hurdles national title, Covington continued to show she's the premier hurdler in the country in her 100m hurdles season debut. The junior crossed the line in 12.86 to move up a spot in the A&M history books to No. 5, while also grabbing the No. 1 spot in the NCAA and No. 2 spot in the world this year in the event. Ja'Qualon Scott ensured the Maroon & White's sweep of the hurdle events, as he crossed the line in the men's 110m hurdles in 13.22.
The women's 4x100m relay quartet of Bria Bullard, Camryn Dickson, Latasha Smith and Jasmine Montgomery secured the Aggies' second-straight win in the event of the outdoor season, crossing the line in first 43.44 thanks to an impressive anchor leg from Montgomery.
Staying hot on the track, the men's 400m group captured six of the top-eight spots in the event, headlined by Antonie Nortje who paced the group with a time of 45.41 which ranks as the No. 2 time in the nation. The women also impressed in the event, claiming fourth through seventh, as Jaydan Wood ran 52.80 to top the group.
Montgomery also had an impressive solo outing in the 100m, placing fourth with a time of 11.22, while Sam Whitmarsh opened his outdoor 800m account, recording a time of 1:48.41 which placed him sixth in the event.
Gavin Champ was the standout performer in the field during his outdoor triple jump season debut, as the junior recorded a mark of 15.59m/51-1.75 to take second in the event. Other top-five finishers in the field included Madison Murray in the high jump (1.70m/5-7), Victoria Kadiri in the women's triple jump (12.55m/41-2.25) and Carlie Weiser in the shot put (16.10m/52-10).
