Aggies Headed to NCAA Semifinals
May 15, 2025 | Women's Tennis
WACO – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team is returning to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive season. The Maroon & White toppled the No. 10 Tennessee Volunteers, 4-2, in Thursday's quarterfinal match at Hurd Tennis Center.
No. 67 Mia Kupres, who battled back from down 4-1 in a second-set tiebreaker, clinched the match for Texas A&M. She lost the opening set 6-3 and trailed 3-1 in the second set before storming back to force the tiebreaker. No. 66 Leyla Britez-Risso grabbed the momentum for Tennessee, going up 4-1 before Kupres regained her composure and rattled off five straight points, eventually triumphing in the tiebreaker, 7-5, blasting a service ace for set point. Kupres finished off the match 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 as she raced No. 109 Daria Smetannikov to claim the last point.
The Aggies fell behind 1-0 early after a slugfest in doubles court 2 went in Baylor's favor. Texas A&M's Mary Stoiana/ Kupres made quick work of No. 30 Catherine Aulia/Britez-Risso on court 1, but moments later Tennessee knotted the doubles with Vanesa Thornton/Maeve Thornton prevailing over Nicole Khirin/Lucciana Perez on court 3, 6-1. Lexington Reed/Daria Smetannikov erased a 3-0 deficit to tie their match on court 2, 4-4, but No. 72 Elza Tomase/Saray Yli-Piipari claimed the last two games.
No. 13 Khirin got the Aggies back in the fight, dicing up No. 41 Aulia on court 2, 6-2, 6-2.
While No. 51 Lucciana Perez, fought off multiple match points in her second set, Texas A&M conquered on courts 1 and 6 to race out to a 3-1 advantage. No. 1 Stoiana waylaid No. 7 Tomase on the marquee court, 7-5, 6-2. A&M's Lexington Reed won a see-saw affair at the backend of the lineup, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The Aggies swung the momentum in their favor in the second sets, winning five of six. On three of the courts, the second-set win kept the action alive.
Perez was on the brink of sealing the match, serving at 40-15, up 4-3 in the third set when a lightning delay went in effect. Perez went up 5-3 when they returned to action, but Vanesa Suarez stymied her the rest of the way. Tennessee won on court 4, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, trimming its deficit to 3-2.
When Kupres ended the match Smetannikov held a precarious 6-7(6), 6-2, 3-2 edge on court 5.
This marks Texas A&M's third trip to the NCAA semifinal. In addition to last year's national title run, the Aggies played in the 2013 championship match.
