
Track & Field Opens Road Campaign with Corky Classic

LUBBOCK – The Texas A&M track & field team kicks off its road slate at the Corky Classic, Jan. 16-17, held at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center with events starting at 3 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
The Maroon & White prepare for their second meet of the season following a standout showing in their home opener. The group won 14 events at the McFerrin Invitational with eight coming on the track and six in the field. In addition to the titles, the Aggies recorded four all-time marks which ranked in the programs top 12 performers list.
Texas A&M's field athletes got the ball rolling, as Etoro Bassey and Bradie Menegatti swept the men's and women's high jump titles, respectively, in their collegiate debuts. Following suit in the field was Aleksandr Solovev in the men's pole vault, Morgan Davis and Micah Larry in the long jumps and finally Carlie Weiser in the shot put.
On the track, Sophia Bendet claimed her first career collegiate title in the mile. Iliya Dryaba ran away from the field to win the 300m. The Aggies swept three events on both the men's and women's side to conclude their productive day, courtesy of Jaiya Covington and Blake Harris in the 60m hurdles, Tharushi Karunarathna and Peter Narumbe in the 600m and both 4x400m relay teams.
The Aggies produced four record book performances, all on the women's side as Lily Carlson highlighted the group entering the ranks at No. 3 in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.27m/14-0. Avery Perkins climbed to No. 8 in the 1,000m (2:51.80), while Bendet in the mile (4:49.74) and Davis in the long jump (6.26m/20-6.5) debuted at No. 9 in their respective events.
Texas A&M will compete against 23 teams including Abilene Christian, Angelo State, Arizona, Arizona State, Barton CC, Baylor, Lubbock Christian, New Mexico State, New Mexico JC, Northwestern State, Odessa College, Purdue, SMU, South Plains, Tarleton State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UTEP, Wayland Baptist, West Texas College and West Texas A&M.
