EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 2 Texas A&M Aggies battle the No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes in Monday's ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship semifinals action at Combe Tennis Center. First serves are at 6:30 p.m.
The teams have faced stiff challenges to advance to the semifinals. Texas A&M (8-1) conquered No. 12 Vanderbilt and No. 6 Oklahoma by identical 4-2 tallies. Ohio State (4-0) toppled No. 7 Duke and No. 3 North Carolina in the same 4-2 fashion.
Last season, Texas A&M had its best showing at the event with a runner-up finish. The Aggies are one of two teams to advance to the semifinals in three of the last four years, joined by Georgia.
The Aggies boast three ranked singles players. Lucciana Perez checks in at No. 41, followed by Mia Kupres at No. 46 and Daria Smetannikov at No. 96. Perez is 8-0 in dual singles action and has wins over No. 7 Anastasiia Grechkina of Pepperdine, No. 15 Valeria Ray of Vanderbilt and No. 12 Julia Garcia Ruiz in the last 10 days. Smetannikov is 7-0 this spring while Violeta Martinez, Lexington Reed and Anna Perelman are all 6-2.
Ohio State sports four ranked singles players, led by No. 3 Luciana Perry and 13 Teah Chavez. No. 52 Nao Nishino and No. 114 Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev provide depth down the lineup. The versatile Buckeyes have five different doubles combinations ranked in the ITA Top 90. In addition to their ITA Indoors wins, Ohio State has victories over Iowa (4-0) and No. 15 Virginia (4-0).
Texas A&M is 3-0 all-time against Ohio State with all the matches coming at neutral sites. The Aggies earned a 5-2 at the 2012 ITA Kickoff Weekend in Tallahassee. The Maroon & White prevailed in an ITA Indoors quarterfinal match, 4-0, in Seattle in 2023 and two weeks later beat the Buckeyes, 5-2, in Orlando.
