BATON ROUGE – The No. 16 Texas A&M softball team clinched its SEC opening series with a 3-2 win over No. 17 LSU Sunday night at Tiger Park, marking the program's first series victory in Baton Rouge.
Texas A&M improved to 19-8 overall and 2-0 in SEC play, while LSU fell to 18-9 and 0-5 in conference action. The Aggies jumped out early behind Mya Perez and relied on strong pitching from Sidne Peters and Sydney Lessentine to hold off a late LSU rally.
Perez led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, while Kennedy Powell finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Texas A&M went 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position, while the pitching staff held LSU to 0-for-6 in those situations. In the circle, Peters improved to 7-3 after tossing 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts while allowing two runs on three hits and three walks. Lessentine secured her first save of the season one day after earning the win in the series opener.
Powell ignited the Aggies in the opening inning, leading off with a single before stealing second base. Perez followed with a 255-foot home run to the second-row berm in left field to give Texas A&M a 2-0 lead.
Peters struck out the side in the bottom of the first while stranding two Tigers on base.
The teams traded scoreless innings over the next five frames as Peters worked out of jams in the second, third and fourth innings while Texas A&M managed just one hit during the stretch.
Texas A&M added an insurance run in the sixth. Powell again sparked the rally with a single before swiping her second base of the night. Perez delivered her third RBI of the game with a single to extend the Aggie lead to 3-0.
LSU responded in the bottom half with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Peters regrouped with her seventh strikeout before forcing a pop up to end the inning.
The Aggies threatened again in the seventh when pinch hitter Maudi Sauni singled to center field. Paislie Allen entered as a pinch runner, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, but LSU escaped the inning with a strikeout to leave Allen stranded.
The Tigers mounted one final push in the seventh, scoring once before Lessentine closed the door to secure the series-clinching victory.
