The 14th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team saw seven of its goals scored by six different players in route to a shutout victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Sunday at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. With the win the Aggies improve to 12-3-2, 6-2-1 in Big 12. The loss drops the Red Raiders to 1-16-0, 0-8 in conference.
"I was pleased with our team, they went out and played an attractive game," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "It was a hard day to play because of the wind. Tech battled the whole game, a credit to them, they didn't give up and they tried to play the whole time. Now for us it's one more game."
A&M started the game a little slow before gaining the momentum needed to tuck-away four of the seven goals leading into halftime. Junior, forward Madison Klovstad sent a cross from the right sideline to the top of the box, finding Ashlee Pistorius for the game-winner with 24:52 on the clock.
The second goal of the first half came in the 37th minute off a double assist on a quick pass from Pistorius to senior Carrie Berend who in turn found Melissa Garey waiting in the box to notch her 14th goal of the season.
Berend turned around and within two minutes of the last goal, capitalized on quick corner kick in which she sent a short pass to Laura Probst who immediately gave it back to Berend, then dribbling to the top left of the box fired the shot past Red Raider goalkeeper Beth Lippert to increase the Aggie lead, 3-0.
Berend connected with Garey again on a nicely placed cross with just over four minutes left in the first half, giving the sophomore forward her second goal of the game and 15th of the season, and sending the teams into halftime with the Aggies ahead 4-0.
"The first half, I think we sputtered for the first 25 minutes," said Guerrieri. "And then really kicked it into high gear, Carrie Berend and Madison Klovstad did a great job on the flanks for us and Ashlee [Pistorius] and Mel [Garey] are deadly in front of goal."
The Aggies didn't lose a step during the break, coming out gaining and maintaining possession of the ball for the majority of the second half, only allowing Tech to take one shot.
Six minutes into the second period, Klovstad sent a pass from the left sideline to Marissa Sarkesian who found Kat Krambeer for her fifth goal of the season and the Aggies' fifth goal of the day.
Almost 20 minutes later, in the 72nd minute, the Aggies were awarded a corner kick and sophomore Allison Martino took the shot and tucked the ball away, unassisted, and putting the A&M up 6-0.
With just less than seven minutes left in regulation, freshman Laura Grace Robinson jumped in on the scoring action, netting the Aggies last goal of the day, a rebound from Martino and Suzzette Devloo.
The win, before 2,673 fans, puts the Aggies even closer to their goal of being named the Big 12 Regular Season Champions.
"We're one game away from clinching [the championship]," noted Guerrieri. "All we can do is take care of what we can control. We're getting to play at home and that's nice, it's senior night. There should be a good buzz in the air and we really need a good crowd for that."
Scoring the game-winner and recording an assist, Ashlee Pistorius was named State Farm Player of the Game.
Friday, A&M will face the Baylor Bears (4-11-2, 2-6-1 in Big 12) in a game slated to honor the senior soccer players and will start at 8:00 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. The Aggies hold the lead in the all-time series 5-4-1.
