Texas A&M women?™s basketball coach Gary Blair is turning over the reigns of his program to a pair of local radio disc jockey duos for the annual Maroon and White Game being held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Reed Arena.
The intersquad game will feature regulation timing and Big 12 Conference officials, but the coaching will be handled by local radio morning show hosts from Candy 95 (KNDE-FM) and 104.7 The Mix (KKYS-FM). Admission to the game is free.
?Our fans will get the chance to judge the team for themselves and see who looks good and who is playing good,? Blair said. ?I?™ll sit back and evaluate the game from the scorer?™s table and let the assistant coaches and guest coaches coach the teams. It will be fun and something I think our kids will enjoy.?
Leading the Maroon team will be the tandem from the Mix Morning Show with K.O. and Dee (104.7 The Mix).
The Maroon team will be led by last season?™s Big 12 Freshman of the Year Morenike Atunrase and three-time Big 12 Rookie of the Week A?™Quonesia Franklin.
Meanwhile, the White team will be coached by the Candy 95 morning team of Scotty Mac and Frito. It will mark the second coaching appearance for Scotty Mac. He coached in the game in 2003.
The White team will be paced by two returning senior starters Erica Roy and Tamea Scales and will include 6-foot-6 junior transfer center Lenka Zimova, the tallest player in A&M history.
The cross-town hype between the competing morning shows about the game has started.
Veteran coach Scotty Mac said his team will utilize all tactics to win.
?It?™s going to be a war on the floor,? Scotty Mac said. ?We will use any means necessary to win the game.?
First year coach K.O. was very confident of the Maroon team?™s preparations by saying simply, ?we?™re ready.?
The Aggies feature a team consisting of 11 players that are entering their first or second year with the school. The incoming players as a class were ranked No. 20 in the nation during the recruiting period and ranked as the third best class in the Big 12.
?We?™ve got six new kids that are working hard in our system,? Blair said. ?This type of game is good because everyone is going to play double digit minutes. The film is the most valuable tool we get from this game.?
A&M enters the season on the heels of its most successful season since joining the Big 12. Last year the Aggies reached the quarterfinals of the postseason WNIT and posted a winning record both for the first time since 1996.
Following the game, fans will be invited to the court for the chance to meet and greet the Aggies.
Season tickets for the 2005-06 campaign will be available at the arena.
A&M will host Everyone?™s Internet in exhibition play on Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
