The No. 14 Texas A&M soccer team played relentlessly on Friday as they completely overpowered the Washington Huskies in a 6-0 victory at the Regal Soccer Complex in Knoxville, in the first round of the First Tennessee Classic.
"We've been creating chances all season," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "Today we finally tucked away enough to break the game open."
Persistence paid off in the 11th minute of play as sophomore Melissa Garey planted a rebound off the crossbar into the back of the net for the game winner and her fifth goal of the season.
Late in the first half A&M attacked full force and posted a couple of close calls, one being a cross from Allison Martino to Kat Krambeer in the 20th minute from six yards out that was blocked by a Washington defender. With eight minutes remaining on the clock, Carrie Berend fired a hard shot from the left wing that ricocheted off the top of the crossbar before being cleared by the Huskies.
The Aggies went into halftime ahead 1-0, having outshot Washington 11-2.
A&M came out running and gunning in the second half, scoring three goals within the first 10 minutes of play. Garey sent a shot from the top of the box in the 48th minute past Washington goalkeeper, Kelsey Rasmussen to score her sixth goal of the season. Laura Probst and Martino were awarded with the double assist.
Two minutes later, Paige Carmichael headed a clean shot off a throw-in from Probst to score her first goal of the season, giving the Aggies a 3-0 lead. Probst, not content with just providing assists, scored a goal of her own in the 53rd minute, as she controlled a bounce off a Huskie defender in front of the box and sailed it past Rasmussen making the score 4-0 in A&M's favor.
Ashlee Pistorius decided to get in on the scoring action as well, heading a flick off a rebound from Lauren Pfister in the 59th minute for her sixth goal of the season, giving A&M a 5-0 lead.
With 28:08 left in regulations, Probst attacked the goal again from the front of the box, sending a looping shot over Rasmussen into the back of the net. The goal was her second of the half, putting the game out of reach for the Huskies, 6-0.
With two assists and two goals scored, Probst was named State Farm Player of the Game.
"This was another 'squad victory' for us. Everyone played and we were able to suffocate Washington with the pressure we placed on them," said Guerrieri. "They were an Elite 8 team last season, a solid Pac 10 program. I am very proud of our girls with this win."
The Aggies finish the First Tennessee Classic on Sunday when they take on the Cardinal of Stanford. Game time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. You can access game stats by logging on to AggieAthletics.com.
