The No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies controlled the majority of the play, but lost to the Michigan State Spartans 1-0 in overtime at Old College Field today.
The Spartan defense held the Aggie attack scoreless as A&M failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.
"We missed so many chances in front of the goal. We have to be more dangerous with our chances," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "When you're playing good teams like this one from the Big 10 you'll be punished for missing those chances."
Although A&M outshot MSU 8-4 in the first half, the teams went into halftime scoreless. At end of regulation, the score remained deadlocked 0-0, with the Aggies having now outshot MSU 14-5.
In overtime, the Spartans moved the ball down the field by being awarded three consecutive throw-ins, and then earned a corner kick on a missed cleared ball over the Aggie's endline by an A&M defender. Linsey Laskowski served the corner kick toward the near post, Dana Voss flicked it toward the middle of the six yard box, where Emma Harris spun and redirected the ball past Aggie goalkeeper Katie Jo Spisak, giving MSU the golden goal win.
"Harris showed a great deal of desire," said Guerrieri. "She seemed to just flat out want that ball more than we did. And that hurts me to say."
The Aggies opened the 2005 season with 272 minutes of shutout ball before finally allowing the goal.
"This is a tough way to lose a game," commented Guerrieri. "But our players do have a lot of character and ability, so I'm confident we'll come out and play harder and smarter than this on Sunday."
The Aggies will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the Michigan Wolverines at U-M Soccer Field this Sunday, September 4 as the second round of the Big 12/Big 10 Soccer Challenge continues. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. and can be heard by logging on to aggieathletics.com.
