The defending Big 12 champion Texas A&M Aggies used two second-half goals to overwhelm the Nebraska Cornhuskers (8-4-3, 3-3-1) in front of 4,287 fans at the Aggie Soccer Stadium, to remain undefeated (10-3-1, 7-0-0) and in first place in the Big 12 standings.
The Aggies outshot the Cornhuskers 21-4 on the evening and held a 10-1 shot advantage in the first-half, but couldn?™t find a way to beat Nebraska goalkeeper Jamie Klages until the game?™s 54th minute when Laura Grace Robinson headed home a Madison Klovstad corner kick.
Prior to that Klages had turned away point blank shots from Aggie forwards Kat Krambeer, Elisabeth Jones and Ashlee Pistorius, among others. Klages made nine saves on the evening as the Aggies came at her in wave after wave of attacking movements through the midfield and around the corner of the Husker defense.
In the game?™s 73rd minute, first team All-Big 12 forward Melissa Garey doubled the A&M scoreboard advantage, taking a one-time pass from Kat Krambeer and blasting it past Klages into the upper corner of the net.
A&M kept the pressure on Nebraska all evening, out corner kicking the Huskers 9-1, and holding possession of the ball for a great majority of the match.
?I?™m real pleased for our players,? said A&M coach G Guerrieri after the match. ?All our ladies worked hard off the ball and played some really attractive stuff all over the field. I thought Nebraska did a great job of keeping us off balance in the final 18 yards of the field and Klages had one of the best performances in goal that we?™ve seen in a long time to keep the score close?
Laura Grace Robinson was named the State Farm Player of the Game. It was Robinson?™s first game back in the Aggie line-up after missing the past eight games with an injury.
?It was great having LG back on the field tonight. She?™s a special player and really adds a lot to our success,? said Guerrieri.
The Aggies?™ next match will be Friday, Oct. 20th against Iowa State. It will be Senior Night and kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
