HOUSTON - The 17th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team lost a close 4-3 decision to eighth-ranked Texas in a heated battle for the Texas Cup which lasted nearly four hours Friday night at the Downtown Club at the Met.
The Aggies (3-2) didn't go down without a fight winning two of the top three singles lines in the non-conference dual match between the two in-state rivals. Junior All-American Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) upset fifth-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, at the top of the lineup to improve to an undefeated 4-0 on the season. It was Krajicek's second-straight victory over a top-ranked opponent after dispatching 2009 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State in straight sets on Jan. 31.
Junior Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.), ranked No. 32 nationally in the Campbell/ITA singles rankings, knocked off ninth-ranked Ed Corrie, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 line, while junior Alexey Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) defeated No. 38-ranked Josh Zavala in a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 (3), at No. 4.
"The highlight of the night was Austin Krajicek beating (Dimitar) Kutrovsky," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "The confidence from his last match against Nedovyesov has carried forward. He is on a good run right now. Jeff Dadamo played a solid match as well as Alexey Grigorov against Zavala. Alexis Klegou had a three-set match, but couldn't get over the hump. We have to do a better job of taking advantage of opportunities."
The Longhorns (4-0) swept the doubles point early and took a 1-0 lead into singles. Kellen Damico, Jean Andersen and No. 104-ranked Vasko Mladenov claimed the remaining points for UT. They have now won all six Texas Cup meetings in the non-conference rivalry series.
"Texas is a very good team," Denton said. "They do not have many holes in their lineup. We had a chance tonight and played them close, but didn't get it done. We are disappointed, but it's a long season and we will keep on fighting."
A&M will next travel to No. 31 Tulsa (6-2) for a Sunday, Feb. 7 indoor dual match in Tulsa, Okla. Live scoring and video will be available at: www.tulsahurricane.com.
