Sep 07, 2014 | Soccer
Tempe, Arizona – The Texas A&M Aggies allowed the decisive goal in the 88th minute, falling to Arizona State, 2-1, at the Sun Devil Classic on a sweltering Sunday afternoon.
Texas A&M (4-1-1) was first on the draw, scoring in the fourth minute of action. Mikaela Harvey collected the ball 40 yards out and dribbled through the Sun Devil defense into the penalty box. Harvey threaded a pass between two defenders to Kelley Monogue near the PK spot. Monogue needed just one dribble before dumping a left-footed shot into the netting for the 1-0 lead.
With the goal, Monogue became the eight player in school history to hit the 100-point mark for their career. Her career numbers stand at 42 goals and 18 assists.
After Monogue's strike, the Aggies missed a pair of opportunities to put Arizona State on the 3:10 to Yuma. Shea Groom hit the crossbar from 20 yards out in the 18th minute and Janae Cousineau had a chance to put a header away inside the six-yard box in the 25th minute, but Arizona State netminder Chandler Morris made a valiant save.
The Sun Devils knotted the match in the 41st minute. Taking advantage of one of the rare corner kick opportunities in the opening stanza, Tommi Goodman lobbed a service that eluded a leaping Aggie netminder Renee McDermott and found the head of Rachel Ometer two yards out in the center of goal for the equalizer.
The Aggies owned the advantages in shots (9-6) and shots-on-goal (5-3) in the opening act, but were unable to take the upper hand into halftime.
The Arizona heat took its toll in the second half with the Sun Devils owning a 12-7 shot advantage after the intermission and the 12th shot proved to be the difference in the match. With 2:51 remaining in the contest, Jessica Raybe lofted a diagonal ball over the Aggie defense to Mackenzie Semerand who was unmarked 10 yards out on the right of goal. She chipped a shot over McDermott for the game-winner.
For the match, Arizona State owned an 18-16 advantage in shots, but the shots-on-goal were knotted at 5-5. Texas A&M owned a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, but Arizona State was the only squad to convert on an opportunity.
McDermott made three saves in goal for the Aggies. Morris notched four saves for the Sun Devils.
The Aggies return to action on Thursday when the Maroon and White host the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in a 7 pm contest at Ellis Field.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On the match…
“We're disappointed. We were gasping for any energy at the end. It was a good goal at the end by Arizona State. They played well. I think it was probably fairly even statistically and in possession, but they had the better chances late and they converted on the set piece at the end of the first half. We had some great chance early on that we rue not finishing.”
On playing the most physically demanding weekend of the year…
“We had a really tough match on Friday in the heat. To play such a hard, physical team on Friday night, I think we did a really good job in recovery. We were beat up, physically beat up. I was pleased with our fitness in the first half, but it caught up with us at the end. If we could have got the match to overtime, we would have had a chance to get our second wind and get some fresh legs back out there.
