Oct 10, 2015 | Women's Tennis
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Members of the Texas A&M women's tennis team wrapped up competition in the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American held at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Junior Rachel Pierson reached the second round of the 32-player main draw before falling to 13th-ranked Sinead Lohan of Miami, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Saska Gavrilovska reached the second round of the singles back draw, getting an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory over 12th-ranked Viktoriya Lushkova of Oklahoma State in the first round of 16 before retiring after dropping the first set against No. 3 ranked Julia Elbaba of Virginia, 6-0, in the quarterfinal round.
The senior doubles team of Ines Deheza and Stefania Hristov reached the second round of the 32-team doubles main draw, breezing past 22nd-ranked Gabriella Castaneda and Emily Fanning of Florida State, 8-1, in the opening round before falling to fourth-ranked Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton of Vanderbilt, 8-3.
No. 4 seed and fifth-ranked Pierson and sophomore partner Eva Paalma received a first-round bye in the doubles main draw and suffered an 8-5 loss to 39th-ranked Beatrice Capra and Ellyse Hamlin of Duke in the second round. The Aggie duo then narrowly fell to 27th-ranked Sheila Morales-Hidalgo and Blaga Delic of Nevada, 8-7 (5), in the consolation quarterfinals.
"Overall I am pleased with the effort and the results we finished with," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "The highlight of the tournament was Saska beating Lushkova in straight sets. She is as dangerous of an opponent that one can face. I am definitely looking forward to the team being back together over the next few weeks to prepare for and compete in the ITA Texas Regionals on our home courts."
Texas A&M will host the 2015 USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, Oct. 22-26 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
