Aggies Host USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships
Oct 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Many of the top NCAA Division I women's tennis players in Texas will converge in College Station beginning Thursday to compete in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, hosted by Texas A&M at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Admission to the five-day tournament is free.
Singles and doubles championships are scheduled to be played Monday, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 12-15, in Flushing, N.Y.
"We are delighted to be hosting the ITA Texas Regionals for the first time in quite a few years," A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "Coach Patrick Sullivan [Texas A&M associate head coach] and I feel that we have made some great progress on the practice courts over the last two weeks. The team has been split up for a large part of the fall schedule, so it has been nice to have the entire group together as of late. Hopefully that momentum can carry over into the actual tournament."
Singles and doubles draws will be posted later this evening on http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=179554
A&M has had at least one regional champion in each of the last three years and has played in a championship match in each of the last four years of the tournament. Last year, then-junior Ines Deheza and then-sophomore Rachel Pierson won the doubles title. In 2013, senior Cristina Stancu won the singles championship and also advanced to the doubles finals with current-senior Stefania Hristov.
After falling in the championship match in both singles and doubles in 2011, the Aggies swept the tournament titles for the first time in 2012, with Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar winning the singles championship and Stancu and Hristov winning the doubles crown.
