Martell Wins in Midland
Sep 21, 2015 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M men's tennis picked up the program's first tournament victory of the fall over the weekend as junior James Martell claimed his flight at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas.
Martell waited an entire year to represent the Aggies on the court, redshirting last season after transferring from Tyler Junior College. The lefty wasted little time making his presence known in the A&M lineup as he went 4-0 to claim the title over opponents from Texas-Arlington, New Mexico, Wichita State and San Diego.
"I am really proud of James winning his bracket in his first appearance as an Aggie," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "He showed a lot of guts in his last two matches, coming from a set down in each match. This win will be great for his confidence throughout this fall and into the spring season."
Martell picked up three-set wins on Saturday afternoon over Eddie Stoica of Wichita State and Alex Araouzos of San Diego to take home the title. Earlier in the day, Araouzos prevented an all Maroon and White final as he defeated Frankie Colunga in three sets in the flight two semifinals.
The Aggies returned to the courts after a historic season which was capped off with a program-best fifth-place ranking in the final Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Texas A&M men's tennis finished in the top-10 for the sixth time after advancing to the Elite 8 for the second time in program history, falling to eventual National Champion Virginia in the national quarterfinals.
The Maroon and White return to the courts Friday through Sunday as the Aggies host the Conference Challenge at the Mitchell Tennis Center. For more information about Texas A&M men's tennis log on to 12thMan.com or follow the Aggies on twitter at @AggieMTEN or facebook.com/AggieMensTennis.
