ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – The Texas A&M Aggies begin the quest for their third SEC Tournament title Monday as they face the Alabama Crimson Tide in a first round matchup at 6 p.m. at Orange Beach Sportsplex.
The Aggies enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed. The Maroon and White finished the regular-season with a 10-7-1 overall record and were tied with Tennessee and Vanderbilt for sixth place in the league with a 5-5-1 mark. Alabama comes into the contest with a 9-7-2 overall record and a 4-5-2 league ledger.
The Crimson Tide won the regular-season meeting, 2-1, in overtime, back on September 25. Texas A&M played the road match without the services of four starters who were out with injuries.
Texas A&M closed out the regular-season on a three-match win streak, with victories over Kentucky, then-No. 11 Auburn and Mississippi State, to improve their record to 10-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in SEC play. Alabama is coming off a 2-0 win over Vanderbilt, but they are 3-6-2 in the last 11 games.
The Aggies rank second in the league in goals-against average (0.92). Senior goalkeeper Danielle ranks second in the SEC in goals-against average (0.92) and fourth in save percentage (.795). Haley Pounds leads the Aggie offense, ranking seventh in the SEC in points (23) and goals (8) and eighth in assists (7).
Texas A&M claimed SEC Tournament titles in 2013 and 2014. At 9-2 (.818) all-time at the SEC Tournament, the Aggies boast the second-best winning percentage at the event behind Florida (.848).
In 2015, the Aggies advanced to the SEC Tournament championship match for the third consecutive season, falling to Florida, 2-1, in a rain-soaked affair.
The entire SEC Tournament will be televised nationally. The first three days of action will air on the SEC Network and the championship match will air on ESPNU. All of the tournament matches will be available digitally on mobile devices and connect-TVs for SEC Network subscribers whose cable/satellite packages allow access to SEC Network+ through the WatchESPN app and SECSports.com.
