KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – The Texas A&M Aggies dropped a 2-0 decision to the Tennessee Volunteers Sunday afternoon at Regal Stadium.
The two squads were ensnarled in a defensive battle the first half, amassing just seven total shots and three shots-on-goal combined. Haley Pounds had Texas A&M's best effort in the first half, taking a shot from 12 yards out that forced Volunteers' goalkeeper Shea Yanez to make a save. Danielle Rice made a huge save for the Aggies with 11:40 remaining in the first half, going vertical to parry a shot from Ariel Kupritz. Rice also made save on a header from Maya Neal in the opening act.
Tennessee (9-6-0, 4-3-0 SEC) took the lead with 40:35 remaining in the second half on Hannah Wilkinson's eight goal of the season. Anna Bialczak served a ball into the penalty box from the left side and found the head of Wilkinson who put it into the right side netting from six yards out.
The Aggies' best chance to knot the game came with 6:35 remaining in the second half. With numbers converging on the Emily Bates dumped a ball into Pounds unmarked at the penalty spot, but Pounds was unable to hit the ball flush sending a bouncing shot that Yanez made the stop on.
Tennessee added an insurance goal with a 4:38 remaining in the second half. Wilkinson led a counter attack charge into the box and sent a pass into Bialczak. Bialczak chested it down to her feet eight yards out and poked a ball past Rice for the 2-0 edge.
In the waning moments, Yanez thwarted the most dangerous shot of the afternoon for the Aggies when she punched a shot by Stephanie Malherbe just clear of the crossbar with 3:46 showing on the clock.
The Aggies owned the edge in corner kicks, 6-4, but were unable to convert on the opportunities. Tennessee owned the advantage in shots (14-9) and shots-on-goal (5-4).
Texas A&M (7-6-1, 2-4-1 SEC) returns to action next Friday when they travel to Oxford for a 7 pm match against the Ole Miss Rebels.

On the match…
"This is tough to come on the road and give up points when you're trying to climb the standings. Tennessee played really well and Hannah Wilkinson is a player that can create goals. We created chances and didn't finish and they created chances and finished. That's why we're going home with a loss.
