Match Day Preview: NCAA Second Round at USC
Nov 17, 2016 | Soccer
LOS ANGELES, California - The Texas A&M Aggies play in the second round of the NCAA Championship for the 19th consecutive season as the Maroon and White battle the No. 7 USC Trojans at McAlister Field Friday at 3:30 p.m. Central.
A win would put the Aggies in the Sweet Sixteen for the 15th time. Since 1999, Texas A&M has made 13 Sweet Sixteen appearances which is tied with Stanford for fifth in the nation during that span. The Aggies trail only North Carolina (16), UCLA (16), Virginia (16) and Florida State (15) over the stretch.
The Aggies advanced to the second round with a 1-0 win at TCU last Saturday. Stephanie Malherbe scored her first goal of the season in the seventh minute and Danielle Rice made four saves in the shutout.
This marks the fourth consecutive season the Aggies have faced a Pac 12 Conference squad in the NCAA Championship. In 2013, Texas A&M opened up with a 1-0 overtime victory against Utah in the first round. In 2014, the Aggies thumped Arizona, 7-2, in second round play. Last year, Texas A&M toppled Washington, 2-1, in the opening round. All three of those meetings came at Ellis Field.
The Aggies are immersed in a string of tightly contested matches with the 10 of the last 11 being decided by one goal or a draw. Recently, Texas A&M has come out on the better ends of the results, going 5-1 in the last six matches, including wins against Kentucky (2-1 - ot), Auburn (2-1), Mississippi State (2-1), Alabama (1-0 - ot) and TCU (1-0).
Texas A&M is ranked second in the league in goals-against average (0.88). Rice ranks second in the SEC in goals-against average (0.88) and third in shutouts (7). Haley Pounds leads the Aggie offense, ranking fifth in the SEC in assists (10), seventh in points (26) and 10th in goals (8).
Friday's match will be televised on Pac-12 Networks. Live stats are available on USCTrojans.com. The match can be heard on 1550 AM in the Brazos Valley and on www.12thMan.com/listen worldwide.
