Women’s Tennis Hosts David Kent Invitational
Nov 03, 2016 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas A&M women's tennis team makes its one home appearance of the fall season this weekend as the Aggies host the inaugural David Kent Invitational, Friday through Sunday, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Competition begins at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, with action on Sunday slated to start at 10 a.m.
Admission is free.
David Kent had a long and illustrious career as the Texas A&M men's tennis coach from 1979-96, recording the most wins in program history. A member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's Tennis Hall of Fame and the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame, Kent coached current Aggie women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver from 1990-94. Kent, who also coached the Texas A&M women's tennis team in 1980, passed away Nov. 3, 2015, at the age of 80.
"I am so proud to be hosting the inaugural David Kent Invitational," Weaver said. "It has been just over a year now that I lost my close friend. He was an amazing man, mentor, coach and leader to myself and so many that had the honor of playing for him. Very few people carried and represented the core values of our great university in the way that Coach Kent did in his many years here at Texas A&M and many years beyond in our fine community."
Other teams participating in the tournament are Washington, Rice, and TCU. In addition, several players from SFA will be competing.
The Aggies open play Friday against Washington at 11 a.m., while Rice battles TCU.
"We have had some very good practices since coming back from the ITA Texas Regional Championships, and I know that our team is looking forward to competing on our home courts this weekend," Weaver said. "There are definitely some good challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of us with three very good teams in Rice, TCU and Washington. We have progressed very well as a group over the course of the very quick fall season, and it will be fun to see how we fare this weekend."
The David Kent Invitational is the fall season finale for the majority of the players on Texas A&M squad, with a few finishing out the season next week at the UNLV Rebel Invitational in Las Vegas.
The spring dual match season gets underway January 25 as the Aggies play host to Louisiana Tech at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
