Nov 06, 2016 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Members of the Texas A&M women's tennis team went a combined 8-3 on the final day of the David Kent Invitational at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center to finish with a 23-10 record over the three-day tournament.
"Overall we had a very successful tournament," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "The girls competed extremely well and played at a very high level all the way across the board in both singles and the doubles. I feel that we have especially picked up our doubles from earlier this fall and also from last season as well. As this closes out the season for several of our players, they should all feel that they have ended on a high note."
Texas A&M senior Rachel Pierson highlighted the Aggies' successful weekend, going a combined 6-0 in the three-day tournament. Pierson finished 3-0 at the No. 1 singles flight after defeating Lindsey Hodge of Rice, 6-3, 6-4, today, and she also finished 3-0 with Rutuja Bhosale at the No. 1 doubles flight after defeating Sofiko Kadzhaya and Seda Arantekin of TCU, 6-2.
In other action today, A&M's Saska Gavrilovska fell to Wendy Zhang of Rice, 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 2 singles flight, while Bhosale finished with a 2-0 singles record after defeating Savannah Durkin of Rice, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 flight. A&M's Tina Bokhua posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alison Ho of Rice at the No. 4 flight, but Macarena Olivares suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 setback to Priya Niezgoda of Rice at the No. 5 flight and Eva Paalma fell to Fernanada Astete, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 6.
Fifth-year senior Stefania Hristov, who didn't play last spring after having shoulder surgery, recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Darinka Tiboldi of Stephen F. Austin at the No. 7 flight to complete the singles competition.
The Aggies were 4-0 in doubles on the final day of the tournament. In addition to Pierson and Bhosale's win at the No. 1 flight, Paalma and Gonzalez posted a 6-4 victory over Donika Bashota and Alexis Periera of TCU at No. 2 doubles, and Bokhua and Olivaras defeated Gabriela Guilarte and Liza Aginskaya of SFA, 6-2, at No. 3. Hristov and Gavrilovska also teamed to defeat Darinka Tibolda Tiboldi and Kaja Ljubic of SFA, 6-3.
The tournament is named in honor of David Kent, who had a long and illustrious career as the Texas A&M men's tennis coach from 1979-96, recording the most wins in program history. A member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's Tennis Hall of Fame and the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame, Kent coached current Aggie women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver from 1990-94. Kent, who also coached the Texas A&M women's tennis team in 1980, passed away Nov. 3, 2015, at the age of 80.
Members of the participating teams gathered for a group photo in front of the David Kent Courtyard at the Mitchell Tennis Center to remember and honor the legendary coach.
The David Kent Invitational is the fall season finale for the majority of the players on Texas A&M squad, with a few finishing out the season next week at the UNLV Rebel Invitational in Las Vegas.
The spring dual match season gets underway January 25 as the Aggies play host to Louisiana Tech at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
