Feb 19, 2016 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 23 Texas A&M softball team slugged six home runs and scored 21 times Friday, defeating Central Michigan, 11-1, and No. 16 UCF, 10-4 at the Mary Nutter Classic.
"I am pleased with the way we started," head coach Jo Evans said. "One of my favorite things about the day is that every single player got in at some point. That is huge. It is huge for team chemistry. It is huge to know that we have that kind of depth and that everyone feels valued in our lineup. We had pitching, timely hitting and we hit for power. I thought it was a very good day for us."
Against the Chippewas, the Aggies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first on a sophomore Tori Vidales RBI single and two-run homer from senior Cali Lanphear. The Aggies (7-1) tacked on three more in the top of the second to make it 6-0.
Sophomores Kristen Cuyos and Erica Russell drew back-to-back walks and freshman Keeli Milligan knocked in Cuyos on a single to left field. Lanphear singled to left to plate Russell, while Milligan scored on a fielding error, which allowed Lanphear to advance to third.
Sophomore Ashley Walters belted a her second home run of the season in the top of the fourth, before sophomore April Ryan added two more on an RBI double to left. Sophomore Kayla Ober hit a leadoff home run to left in the top of the fifth to cap off the Aggie offense.
Sophomore Trinity Harrington moved to 3-0 on the season striking out five hitters in three innings while only giving up two hits.
With the game tied at one against UCF, Lanphear hit a three-run home run to right to give the Aggies a 4-1 lead after three. The Aggies doubled their lead to 7-1 in the fourth with a leadoff home run from Cuyos and a Ryan double.
UCF rallied in the fifth and sixth to cut the lead to three, before Lanphear hit her third home run of the day, scoring senior Breanna Dozier. Samantha Show earned her fourth win of the season, giving up four hits in five innings while striking out two.
"Cali was spectacular today," Evans said. "Hitting behind Tori Vidales isn't always easy. Tori has done a good job taking her walks when she gets them and when Cali gets up there seeing the ball the way she has, it makes it really hard on teams, because it makes them think they are doing the right thing by not pitching to Tori, and then Cali makes them pay. When she hit the two-run home run in the seventh against UCF, it just really took the wind out of their sail. I thought she was terrific on the day."
The Aggies return to action Saturday against UCSB at 11:30 a.m. CT and No. 9 Washington at 2 p.m. CT.
