Saturday, Feb. 20, 1 p.m.
George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, College Station, Texas
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 15th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team returns to the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on Saturday to play host to Stephen F. Austin. First serve against the Ladyjacks is at 1 p.m.
"It will be nice to get one more match under our belt in playing SFA before we play an always tough Baylor team and then we head straight in to SEC play for the remainder of the season," Aggie first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. "The girls have made some really good progress not only in the last two matches, but also in the practices. [Associate Head Coach Patrick Sullivan] and I are more than pleased with the improvements that we have made over the last week or so."
A&M, 6-3, is riding a two-match win steak and moved up one spot to No. 15 in this week's Oracle/ITA national rankings after defeating 70th-ranked Houston, 6-1, and Abilene Christian, 7-0, last weekend at the Mitchell Tennis Center, where the Aggies are 4-0.
Four Aggies are tied for the team lead with 10 singles victories overall, including junior All-American Saska Gavrilovska, who is No. 54 in the ITA singles rankings. Sophomore Eva Paalma leads the team in singles wins in dual matches only with a 5-2 mark.
In doubles, junior Rutuja Bhosale and senior Anna Mamalat are ranked 45th in the nation and lead the Aggies with a 12-4 overall record and a 4-2 record in dual matches only, all at the No. 2 line.
SFA is 6-3 after suffering its first home loss of the season, a 6-1 setback against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches. The Lady Techsters won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches. Freshman Vanesa Calvo Pardo salvaged SFA's only point, defeating Alba Escalona Perny, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (2) in the last match standing to prevent a shutout.
Calvo Pardo leads the Ladyjacks with a 6-2 record in dual match play, including a 5-1 ledger at the No. 4 line. Calvo Pardo also sports the team's best doubles record as she and partner Denise Maxl are 6-1 in dual matches, including 5-1 at the No. 2 line.
A&M is 6-0 against SFA in the all-time series, which began in 1982. All matches have been contested in College Station, with the most recent match-up dating back to 2002 when the Aggies disposed of the Ladyjacks, 7-0.
The match against SFA marks the Aggies' third contest in a four-match homestand that will conclude their pre-Southeastern Conference schedule. Texas A&M wraps up the homestand against No. 30 Baylor on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. before opening conference play at Auburn on Thursday, March 3.
The SEC leads the nation with nine teams in this week's Oracle/ITA Tennis Rankings top 25: Florida (3), Georgia (4), Vanderbilt (6), Texas A&M (T-15), Alabama (17), Mississippi (18), LSU (19), Kentucky (20) and Mississippi State (25).
