No. 14 Aggies blank Indiana, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Feb 26, 2016 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION – Freshman Samantha Show and senior Katie Marks tossed complete game shutouts Friday as the No. 14 Texas A&M softball team defeated Indiana, 4-0, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 13-0, at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Show threw seven innings, giving up five hits while striking out two to earn her nation-leading ninth win. Marks bamboozled the Islanders, giving up one hit in five innings of work and striking out four to move to 2-0 on the season.
"I am happy our pitchers could get out there and do the job they did," head coach Jo Evans said. "I thought Sam was really good. It was nice to see her keep her pitch count down. She threw into three double plays, which got us out of innings and defensively was really good. Offensively, she helped her cause. Katie had some walks, but she was able to get out of every inning. It was nice to see her get out there after her last start. I am happy to see our pitchers do what we need them to do.
"Initially, it was a nail biter against Indiana. I thought it was huge for us to get those runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give us a little cushion to go into the seventh. I thought Indiana played well. They made plays and they did a great job pitching. Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, it was nice to get all of our players in there and get looks. We are doing a great job off the bench with our pinch hitters and setting the table. I am really pleased to see what those kids are doing and how prepared they are."
The Aggies (14-1), who have won 11 straight, took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third against the Hoosiers. With two outs, freshman Kaitlyn Alderink doubled to right field and scored on a sophomore Tori Vidales single to left field.
A&M tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth on five hits. Senior Cali Lanphear led off the inning with a single before junior April Ryan singled and advanced to second on the throw. Show singled to left, plating Lanphear as sophomore Kristen Cuyos singled up the middle to score Ryan. Senior Alex Masek, who pinch ran for Show, scored on freshman Riley Sartain single.
Against the Islanders, the Aggies quickly jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings. In the first, freshman Keeli Milligan singled before recording one of her four stolen bases on the day and scored from second on a wild pitch. Vidales blasted her fifth home run of the season, before Show drove in sophomore Ashley Walters on a double to center.
The Aggies added five in the second as Alderink began the inning with a two-RBI double to left center. Lanphear singled to right to drive in Alderink before Walters hit a two-RBI single to right, plating Vidales, who reached on an error, and Lanphear.
In the bottom of the fourth, Texas A&M added five runs on three hits. Senior Reagan Boenker was hit by a pitch, followed by Masek, who drew a walk, and junior Celena Massey, who was hit by a pitch. Senior Breanna Dozier singled up the middle to score Boenker and Masek to give the Aggies a 10-0 lead.
Sophomore Hailey Rebar singled down the left field line to score Massey, before sophomore Erica Russell recorded an RBI single, plating Dozier.
A&M returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. CT against UTEP and at 5:15 p.m. CT versus Indiana.
