COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 16th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team aims to stay undefeated in home matches when the Aggies play host to 27th-ranked Ole Miss on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
A&M improved to 7-0 in home matches, 10-4 overall and 2-1 in Southeastern Conference matches only with a 5-2 victory over No. 28 Mississippi State on Friday. The Rebels dropped to 8-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC matches after they were unable to capitalize on a 3-1 lead against No. 15 LSU and fell to the Tigers, 4-3, Friday at the LSU Tennis Complex indoor courts in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
All-American Saska Gavrilovska is the Aggies' top-ranked singles player at No. 40. The junior from Serbia is 13-4 overall, including 4-1 at the No. 1 line. She is coming off the highest ranked singles victory by an A&M player in 2015-16 after coming back to defeat ninth-ranked Jasmine Lee of Mississippi State, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4, on Friday.
Aggie freshman Domenica Gonzalez extended her winning streak to a team-high seven matches with a victory at the No. 4 line against the Bulldogs, and Gonzalez and junior Rutuja Bhosale remained tied for most wins in dual matches with eight apiece.
Junior Rachel Pierson and sophomore Eva Paalma returned to the doubles rankings this week, jumping in at a team-high No. 41 following their 6-3 victory over Alabama's then-20th-ranked duo of Andie Daniell and Erin Routliffe last Sunday. It marked the highest ranked victory by an A&M doubles team in 2015-16. The Aggie duo posted its second consecutive ranked win on Friday, defeating Mississippi State's 34th-ranked Madison Harrison and Georgiana Patrasc, 6-2, at the No. 1 line to clinch the doubles point for A&M.
Bhosale and senior partner Anna Mamalat are No. 56 in the ITA doubles rankings and lead the Aggies with a 15-4 overall mark, including a 7-2 record in dual matches only.
Ole Miss has five players listed in the national singles rankings. Sophomore Arianne Hartono is a team-high No. 49 with a 14-7 overall record and a 7-1 mark at the No. 1 line. Mai El Kamash, who is riding a five match winning streak, is No. 62 with a 15-5 overall record, including a 5-1 ledger at No. 3. Tea Jandric is No. 73 but she suffered her first loss in a dual match and had a seven-match win streak snapped in the loss at LSU. No. 79 Natalie Suk is 5-3 and Allie Sanford is No. 116 although she is 0-0 in dual matches.
Hartono and El Kamash are No. 27 in the national doubles rankings with a 9-5 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in dual matches only.
The Aggies are 5-1 in the all-time series against Ole Miss, including a 4-2 victory against the then-No. 21 Rebels last season in Oxford, Mississippi. A&M, which has won the last three meetings, is 3-0 against Ole Miss in SEC matches only and 1-0 in meetings played in College Station. The Aggies' only loss in the all-time series was in their 2012 season opener as the teams met in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Tallahassee, Florida, with Ole Miss escaping with a 4-3 victory.
