No. 10 Texas A&M sweep Georgia Southern in midweek doubleheader
Mar 15, 2016 | Softball
"I am proud of our kids, because we fought hard today," head coach Jo Evans said. "Neither game was easy. I thought we kept our composure. It wasn't pretty in that first game, but our offense was very explosive. It was the complete opposite in the second game. Kayla Ober was terrific on the mound and at the plate. She showed great leadership. If you are going to have an MVP of the game, it would definitely be her. I am proud of her. It was nice to see Ashley Walters step up and get the big home run. Kristen Cuyos had the two great at bats in the second game to walk to get on for Walters and of course finishing with the walk-off. It was great to see our kids fight. It isn't always going to be easy, and you have to know that your kids can compete no matter what and they did tonight."
A&M took an early lead in game one in the bottom of the first as freshman Keeli Milligan led off with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink plated Milligan on a SAC Fly to left. Sophomore Tori Vidales then singled to right and later scored on a Kristen Cuyos single to center.
The Aggies added another run in the third as freshman Riley Sartain scored on a Vidales walk, before the Eagles took the lead, scoring five runs on five hits and three walks in the top of the third.
A&M countered with a run in the fourth, as Milligan led off the inning with an infield single before recording her 31st stolen base of the season. Dozier knocked in Milligan on a single to right field to cut the lead to 5-4.
Georgia Southern responded with a run in the fifth, before the Aggies delivered the knockout blow, scoring seven runs. A&M loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive singles from sophomore Ashley Walters, freshman Samantha Show and Sartain. Senior pinch runner Alex Masek scored on a fielding error, before Alderink hit a grand slam to right center, the first of her career.
With runners on first and second and two outs, Walters capped off the inning with a two-RBI double to left center, giving the Aggies an 11-6 lead. Senior Cali Lanphear drove in the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a double down the right field line.
Senior Katie Marks earned the win, tossing two innings of relief to move to 7-0 on the season, while Show earned her second save of the season.
In game two, the Aggies battled back from a 2-0 deficit to win in walk-off fashion in the seventh.
Georgia Southern took the lead in the top of the fifth on four singles, before the Aggies tied the game in the sixth on a Walters two-run homer. Cuyos drew a leadoff walk before Walters belted her third dinger of the season.
In the seventh, Lanphear drew a one-out walk and stole second before advancing to third on an error. With the winning run just 60 feet away, Cuyos roped a 2-2 pitch to the wall for a walk-off single.
Sophomore Kayla Ober, who went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a walk, tossed 4.2 innings of work, giving up six hits and two strikeouts in her first start of the season. Show earned her 14th win of the season giving up no hits and striking out three in 2.1 innings of relief.
The Aggies begin SEC action Friday as they host No. 6 LSU for a three-game series at the Aggie Softball Complex. Friday's contest is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
