No. 9 Texas A&M splits day one at San Diego Classic
Mar 05, 2016 | Softball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – No. 9 Texas A&M softball run ruled Boston University, 9-1, in six innings before falling to San Diego State, 10-5, Friday at the San Diego Classic.
"I didn't think we were our sharpest today," head coach Jo Evans said. "We stranded a lot of runners, in the first game we left 12 on and nine against San Diego State. I felt we had opportunities early on to put San Diego State away we just didn't do it. We couldn't get it done. I thought their pitchers did a great job. They got strikeouts in key situations for them. We had several opportunities with bases loaded and runners in scoring position. We have to make sure we are putting the ball in play and putting pressure on them."
The Aggies (18-2) got out to an early 2-0 lead after the bottom of the second. Sophomore Kirsten Cuyos and freshman Riley Sartain got on base via a walk and hit by pitch, respectively, and were moved into scoring position on a sophomore Erica Russell SAC bunt. Freshman Keeli Milligan knocked in both runners on a two-RBI single.
The Terriers got a run back in the top of the third before A&M scored two more in the bottom half. The Aggies loaded the bases on three-consecutive walks and sophomore Ashley Walters scored on an illegal pitch prior to Milligan driving in freshman Samantha Show on a single to left.
Sartain scored in the bottom of the fifth on a freshman Kaitlyn Alderink single to give Texas A&M a 5-1 lead before the Aggies plated four in the sixth.
Senior pinch runner Alex Masek scored on a sophomore Kristen Cuyos sacrifice fly to right field, and Milligan recorded her fourth RBI of the game with an infield single, plating junior April Ryan. Alderink ended the game with a single down the right field line, scoring Sartain and Milligan.
Senior Katie Marks threw 5.1 innings of relief, giving up only one hit and one unearned run to earn her fourth victory of the season.
Against San Diego State, the Aztecs quickly gained a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on three hits. A&M responded with two runs of its own in the top of the second as Cuyos blasted her SEC-leading eighth home run to score Walters.
The Aggies took the lead in the top of the third, scoring two runs on back-to-back doubles from Alderink and sophomore Tori Vidales.
SDSU rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring eight runs on six hits to take a 10-4 lead. Vidales led off the top of the seventh with her sixth home run of the season.
A&M returns to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT against Grand Canyon before taking on the University of San Diego at 6:30 p.m. CT.
