COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 25th-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team aims to knock off its second consecutive top-10 opponent Saturday as the Aggies take on sixth-ranked and league-leading Florida in the Gators' regular-season home finale. First serve is at noon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Florida.
Texas A&M (13-7, 5-4 SEC) is coming off its highest ranked victory of the season after defeating No. 8 South Carolina, 6-1, on Thursday. The match began at the Carolina Tennis Center, where A&M won the doubles point, but the Gamecocks had won four of six first sets. Weather then forced the matched to be moved to the USC Field House indoor courts, where A&M rallied to win four singles matches, including victories by Saska Gavrilovska and Domenica Gonzalez, who both had dropped their opening set but came back to win the match.
Gavrilovska, a junior from Serbia, is a team-high No. 32 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national singles rankings, released last week. The Aggies also have a pair of ranked doubles teams, who were both victorious against the Gamecocks: No. 42 Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson and No. 44 Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat.
Senior Ines Deheza, who gave A&M a 2-0 lead against South Carolina with a 6-3, 6-2 win against 89th-ranked Hadley Berg, leads A&M in singles victories in SEC play with a 7-2 record, and she is tied with Gonzalez, a freshman from Ecuador, for most wins overall with 17.
Bhosale and Mamalat are a team-best 19-5 overall in doubles, including 11-3 in dual matches only and 5-1 in SEC matches.
Florida, the defending SEC regular-season champion, is 13-2 overall, including 8-0 in SEC matches and 9-0 in home matches only after cruising to a 6-1 victory over No. 15 LSU, Thursday in Gainesville. It was the eighth consecutive win for the Gators, whose only two losses on the season were back-to-back 4-3 decisions at No. 1 Cal and at then-No. 16 Stanford on Feb. 26 and 28, respectively.
Six Gators are listed in the ITA singles rankings, including No. 9 Belinda Woolcock, who is 6-1 in SEC matches, and No. 10 Brooke Austin, who is 5-1 in SEC play. Kourtney Keegan is No. 43, followed by No. 82 Josie Kuhlman, who suffered her first SEC loss of the season against LSU after opening conference play, 4-0. No. 87 Anna Danilina is undefeated in league play with a 6-0 record, and she leads the Gators with a 12-1 record in dual match play. Lone senior Brianna Morgan is No. 101 with a 4-0 record in SEC matches only.
The Gators also have four ranked doubles teams, with Austin and Keegan ranked a team-high No. 5. Kuhlman and Woolcock are No. 30, followed by Liang and Porter at No. 50 and Kuhlman and Morgan at No. 62.
Florida owns a slight 3-2 edge against the Aggies in the all-time series, which began in 2013, A&M's first season as a member of the SEC. Three of the matches have come down to the last match standing, including last year when the Gators' Peggy Porter won a third-set tiebreaker against A&M's Stefania Hristov in College Station. A&M is 0-1 against the Gators in matches played at Florida.
The match against the Gators concludes A&M's regular-season road schedule as the Aggies close out the regular season with a three-match homestand beginning Friday, April 8 against No. 63 Tennessee at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. A&M plays host to No. 4 Georgia on Sunday, April 10, and then celebrates Senior Day in the home finale on Saturday, April 16, as the Aggies welcome No. 15 LSU, which will host the SEC Tournament, April 20-24, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
