No. 25 Texas A&M Falls to No. 6 Florida
Apr 02, 2016 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Florida – The sixth-ranked Florida women's tennis team remained undefeated in Southeastern Conference matches and also improved to 10-0 in home contests with a 4-0 victory over No. 25 Texas A&M today at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
"All credit to Florida as they just simply out played us today," Texas A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. "They have an excellent team, and add on to that playing them at their place where they have now won 157 matches in a row was a big ask. Having to face two top 10 teams on the road was a huge challenge for us, and we can head back to Aggieland feeling pretty good with ourselves in getting one of those two wins. It's a nice feeling knowing we get to close out the season with three straight matches all on our home courts."
Texas A&M, which upset No. 8 South Carolina on Thursday, falls to 13-8 overall and 5-5 in SEC matches only. The defending SEC-champion Gators, who were celebrating Senior Day, move to 14-2 overall and 9-0 in conference play.
Rain forced the start of the match to be delayed an hour, but that didn't hamper the Gators, who made quick work of the Aggies once doubles play began. Fifth-ranked Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan disposed of A&M's 42nd-ranked Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson, 6-1, at the No. 1 line. The Gators' lone senior, Brianna Morgan, who was honored before the match, and partner Anna Danilina followed with a 6-2 win over A&M's Ines Deheza and Domenica Gonzalez at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for Florida.
At the No. 2 line, Florida's 30th-ranked Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock held a 5-3 lead over A&M's 44th-ranked Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat, but the match went unfinished.
The teams then began singles play, but no one had finished a first set before rain forced the matches to move to the three indoor courts. A&M was unable to gain the momentum after the change in venue like it had done when its match against South Carolina was moved indoors after starting on the outdoor courts.
Austin, ranked 10th in the nation in singles, gave the Gators a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over 32nd-ranked Saska Gavrilovska at the top of the lineup. Ninth-ranked Woolcock followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Pierson at No. 2, putting Florida up, 3-0.
Kuhlman, ranked 82nd, completed the shutout with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mamalat at the No. 5 line.
The Gators also had leads on the remaining two courts, but play was stopped once Florida recorded the clinching victory. Keegan, ranked 43rd, held a 6-4, 4-1, lead against Gonzalez on Court 4, and 87th-ranked Danilina led Paalma, 5-2, at the No. 6 line.
With its regular-season road schedule now complete, A&M will conclude the regular season with a three match homestand beginning Friday, April 8, when the Aggies play host to Tennessee. First serve is set for 5 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
