"The girls are excited for the opportunity to complete the remainder of the regular season on our home courts," A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. Texas A&M (13-8, 5-5 SEC) climbed seven spots to No. 18 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released earlier this week after going 1-1 last weekend. The Aggies, who are tied with 16th-ranked LSU for seventh place in the SEC standings, began play last week by recording their highest ranked win of the season with a 6-1 victory over No. 8 South Carolina, Thursday, March 31 in Columbia. A&M then closed out the road portion of its regular-season schedule with a 4-0 loss at No. 6 Florida on Saturday.
Individually, A&M junior Saska Gavrilovska is a team-high No. 35 in the ITA national singles rankings. In doubles, Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson check in at No. 32, their highest ranking of the spring. In addition, Rutuja Bhosale and Anna Mamalat are No. 61. They are riding a four-match win streak and are a team-best 19-5 overall, including 11-3 in dual matches only and 5-1 in SEC matches.
Senior Ines Deheza enters the weekend riding a team-high four-match win streak in singles. She leads the Aggies in singles wins in SEC matches with a 7-2 record, and she is tied with freshman Domenica Gonzalez for most wins overall with 17.
Tennessee is 8-12 overall and in 13th place in the SEC with a 1-8 record after suffering narrow 4-3 setbacks to both Missouri and Arkansas last week. The Vols, aiming to end a four match losing skid when they take on the Aggies, dropped 12 spots to No. 75 in the ITA rankings.
The Vols' Sadie Hammond is No. 57 in the ITA singles rankings with a 20-14 record, although she is 2-6 in SEC matches only. She is 12-9 and ranked No. 73 in doubles with partner Eve Repic.
Tennessee owns a slight 6-5 edge against the Aggies in the all-time series, which began in 1989. A&M, however, is 3-0 against the Vols since joining the SEC. Last year, A&M defeated Tennessee, 7-0, in Knoxville. Until A&M joined the SEC for the 2013 season, the teams had not met since 1996, when then-18th-ranked Tennessee defeated A&M, 5-4, to improve to 3-2 in matches played in College Station.
A&M plays host to No. 4 Georgia on Sunday at noon, and then celebrates Senior Day in the home finale on Saturday, April 16, as the Aggies welcome No. 15 LSU, which will host the SEC Tournament, April 20-24, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
