Oct 24, 2017 | Women's Golf
SAN ANTONIO- Texas A&M's women's golf team shot under par for the second consecutive day, completing a comeback from seventh place to finish in a tie for second at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational. Senior Maddie Szeryk earned individual runner-up honors, finishing tied for second with an 8-under 208.
"I am proud of our team for bouncing back from a little bit of a rough start on Sunday, to finish strong and end up under par for the tournament," said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "This team didn't give up on the plan that we had going in, and finished with two really good rounds to finish tied for second."
The Aggies, in seventh place after the first round, shot a 3-under 285 on Tuesday's final round at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. Texas A&M tied with TCU for second place at 4-under 860, behind only Arkansas, who won the event with a 54-hole score of 842. This marks the second time this season the Aggies have finished a tournament under par, and the fifth time in school history that the Aggies have finished under par at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Szeryk fired a 2-under 70 on the par 72 / 6,450 yard course in the third round, finishing tied with Arkansas' Alana Uriell at 8-under 208 for the tournament, and one stroke behind individual medalist Connie Jaffrey of Kansas State. Szeryk has finished in the top 10 in all four events this fall, and has now finished second twice. Szeryk is a combined 23 shots below par since September 3, a span of 10 rounds.
Texas A&M sophomore Courtney Dow shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, battling back from a rough start to the tournament, to finish tied for 15th with a 2-over 218. Dow played the last 45 holes of the tournament at 5-under par after starting the tournament 7-over after nine holes. Junior Chloe Velasco added in a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, finishing tied for 54th at 229 (+13).
Freshman Morgan Lay shot a 1-over 71, to finish the tournament tied for 31st at 222 (+6). Amber Park finished tied for 46th along with teammate Elizabeth Caldarelli, who was playing as an individual, at 10-over 226. Park shot an 10-over 82 on Tuesday, while Caldarelli posted a 3-over 75.
The Aggies return to action October 30-31 at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas, hosted by SMU.
