RECAP: Texas A&M at SMU 2017 Fall Metroplex Mania
Oct 08, 2017 | Women's Tennis
DALLAS – Texas AM freshman Riley McQuaid was the consolation winner in the No. 3 singles draw to highlight the Aggies' performance at the SMU 2017 Fall Metroplex Mania over the weekend at the SMU Tennis Complex, Turpin Stadium & Brookshire Family Pavilion.
"We accomplished what we need the most, and that is getting in some good, tough matches," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "This kind of had the same feel as the first Midland tournament as we got a bit better as the tournament went along and we finished the last day on a high note much the same as Midland. With such a young team this year, one of our main goals is to just keep getting better and better throughout the season."
Three A&M players competed in the three-day tournament, including McQuaid, who fell to Sarah Adams of Abilene Christian, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round but came back to win her next two matches to win the consolation title. McQuaid got a win over Northwestern State's Elzbieta Iwaniuk, who won the first set, 6-4, but was trailing the second set, 5-4, when she defaulted. McQuaid then defeated Madalina Grigoriu of Louisiana-Monroe, 6-1, 6-0, in the consolation final.
Aggie redshirt sophomore transfer Margo Taylor made her A&M debut by winning two of her three singles matches in the No. 6 singles draw. Taylor came back to defeat Ileana Mocciola of Abilene Christian, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the opener. Taylor then fell to Momoka Horiguchi (unattached), 6-2, 6-1, but closed out the tournament with another comeback, defeating Ilona Golynker of Georgia Southern, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4.
Aggie senior Macarena Olivares, making her first appearance of the fall, competed in the No. 1 singles draw and opened with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Kristen Rehse of Georgia Southern. Olivares then fell to ACU's Lucile Pothier, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round of consolations before defeating Carla Cerdan Vives of Texas Arlington, 6-2, 6-3.
Olivares teamed with Taylor in doubles, and the pair dropped their first two matches, falling to Stefana Andrei and Karolina Snita of ULM, 7-5, and Anna Perez-Lopez and Sarai Monarrez Yesaki of SMU, 7-6 (4). The Aggie duo then got a 6-4 victory over Arizona's Marie Van Aelst and Gitte Heynemans to close out the tournament.
McQuaid teamed with Tiffany Hollebeck of SMU in doubles, and the pair reached the finals of the No. 2 doubles draw. They cruised to a 6-1 victory over Elzbieta Iwaniuk and Judit Castillo of Northwestern State in the opener and then held off Sarah Eleanor Adams and Nini Memishishi of ACU, 6-4. McQuaid and Hollebeck fell to Polina Ivanova and Polina Mutel of Northwestern State, 6-4, in the championship match.
The Aggies continue their fall slate Oct. 13-17 as they compete in the ITA Texas Regional Championship, hosted by TCU in Fort Worth.
