Texas A&M Competes at ITA Regional Championship in Fort Worth

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M competes against many of the top collegiate women's tennis players in the state this weekend as the Aggies participate in the ITA Texas Regional Championship, presented by Oracle, Friday-Tuesday, Oct. 13-17, at TCU's Bayard H Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
Action gets underway Friday with the opening round of doubles at 8:30 a.m. followed by two rounds of singles.
Singles and doubles championships are scheduled to be played Tuesday, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November in Flushing, N.Y.
"Regionals will bring us some good competition against a very strong field of teams amongst the state of Texas" said Mark Weaver, who is in his third season as head coach of the Aggies. "We have been having some very good practices, and we are definitely making some strides in the right direction. [A&M assistant] coach [Jordan] Szabo and I and are looking forward to seeing how it all translates in the matches."
Aggie seniors Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma will be making their first appearance of the fall and are the No. 2 seed in the 64-team doubles draw. Ranked No. 29 in the ITA preseason national doubles rankings, the duo received a first-round bye and will take on the winner between Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Marina Miguel and Louise Trigona and Incarnate Word's Victoria Kareh and Matea Zemunik in the second round on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Freshman Iulia Ivascu and senior Macarena Olivares also received a first-round bye and will face No. 4 seed Lindsey Hodge and Wendy Zhang of Rice on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
The Aggie freshman duo of Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Riley McQuaid will face Julia Navajo and Ana Perez of Texas State in first-round action on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
Singles gets underway at 10 a.m. on Friday with Paalma facing Tyler Duncum of Texas, Olivares taking on Sarai Monarrez of SMU, and Ivasuc meeting Lauren Alter of Houston. Faa-Hviding is slated to take the court at 11 a.m. to face Minying Liang of North Texas. Also schedule to open singles play at 11:30 a.m. is McQuaid, who takes on Ana Glumac of Houston.
Sophomore Margo Taylor, who made her A&M debut at the SMU Metroplex Mania last weekend and went 2-0 against Division I opponents, received a first-round bye in the 128-player singles draw. She will face the winner between Alex Jones of Texas State and Jordan Henry of Abilene Christian on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Other schools represent in the tournament are Baylor, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, TCU, Texas Tech and UT-Arlington.
