COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 22nd-ranked Texas A&M women's tennis team closes out its preconference schedule Tuesday as the Aggies play host to No. 15 TCU in a Top-25 showdown at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. First serve is at 4 p.m., and all fans with a valid Texas A&M student ID will be admitted free.
"We are looking forward to competing against a very good team in TCU," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We have had plenty of battles with them over the years, that is for sure. This week is filled with great opportunities with TCU, South Carolina and Florida all coming to town."
The Aggies, who begin their Southeastern Conference slate and close out a four-match homestand this weekend by hosting No. 21 South Carolina on Friday and defending SEC champion and No. 1-ranked Florida on Sunday, are 7-3 after defeating SMU, 6-1, last Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Texas A&M, 2-2 against opponents ranked in the top 25, improved to 4-1 in home matches with the victory over the Mustangs.
TCU is 6-2 after suffering a 4-3 loss at No. 17 Duke on Saturday. The host Blue Devils rallied to win the last three singles matches to claim the come-from-behind victory. The loss snapped a three-match winning streak by the Frogs, whose only other loss this season was a 4-0 setback at No. 5 Oklahoma State on Jan. 29.
Individually, No. 45 Rachel Pierson is the Aggies' highest ranked singles player. The senior is a team-leading 17-5 in all matches, and she has played every dual match at the No. 1 line where she is 7-2 and tied with junior teammate Macarena Olivares for most wins in dual matches only.
Senior Rutuja Bhosale, 12-6 overall and 6-3 in dual matches only, is No. 75 in the national singles rankings. She and Pierson are No. 14 in the national doubles rankings with a 17-4 overall record, including a 6-2 ledger at the No. 1 line. Bhosale has 82 career doubles victories and is only four wins shy of moving into a tie for the 10th most career doubles victories in Texas A&M program history. Senior Stefania Hristov is only two wins from the top 10 with 84 career doubles victories.
At No. 94, Seda Arantekin is the Frogs' only ranked singles player. She is 13-7 overall, including 6-1 in dual matches after suffering her first loss of the spring season at Duke. Marie Norris enters the contest against the Aggies with a 4-0 dual match record and a seven-match winning streak overall.
In doubles, Donika Bashota and Olaya Garrido-Rivas are ranked 10th in the nation and have helped TCU capture the doubles point in seven of eight matches. The pair is riding a five-match winning streak and is 5-1 at the No. 1 line.
Texas A&M owns a 21-18 lead in the all-time series which began in 1980, but the series is tied, 10-10, in matches played in College Station.
The former Southwest Conference foes most recently met twice in 2015, with both matches being played at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The then-No. 41 Frogs upended the 11th-ranked Aggies, 4-2, on Jan 25, 2015, in the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Texas A&M avenged the loss in the second round of the NCAA Championship, as the 10th-ranked Aggies downed No. 17 TCU, 4-0, to advance to the round of 16 for the third consecutive year.
