COLLEGE STATION, Texas – On Sunday, the Texas A&M Aggies look to build on the momentum they established in overtime of Friday's season opener. They return to action against the University of San Diego at Torero Stadium with first kick slated for 3:30 pm Central.
The Aggies' were in control of possession for much of Friday's match and owned a 17-10 advantage in shots after 90 minutes of play against Pepperdine, but it took a screamer from 18 yards out by Jimena Lopez in the 94th minute to break the scoring seal. Her golden goal gave Texas A&M a 1-0 victory to start the season.
San Diego experienced the opposite in their season opener, yielding a golden goal to Virginia Tech in the 109th minute in a 1-0 loss.
Texas A&M returns 13 letterwinners from the 2016 campaign, including 8 of 11 starters. The returnees account for 24 of the Aggies' 27 goals from last season and the Maroon and White add the potent Ally Watt who redshirted last season while playing for the United States U20 Women's National Team. Texas A&M welcomes back All-American Mikaela Harvey, along with fellow All-SEC performer Haley Pounds and former SEC All-Freshman honorees Emily Bates, Grace Piper and Watt.
The Aggies finished the 2016 season with a 12-8-2 record. The Maroon and White appeared in their 22nd consecutive NCAA Division I Championship and advanced to the Second Round for the 19th consecutive year.
The Toreros are coming off a 10-8-1 finish in 2016. San Diego finished fifth in the West Coast Conference last year with 5-4-0 mark.
USD was picked to finish seventh in the WCC Coaches Preseason Poll. The Toreros return their starting goalkeeper from 2016, WCC All-Freshman Amber Michel who posted a 1.28 goals-against average and six shutouts on the season. Their top returning scoring option is Summer Mason who was tied for the team leads in points (17), goals (6) and assists (5) last season.
