Aggies and Cowgirls Play to 2-2 Draw

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 12 Texas A&M Aggies and No. 19 Oklahoma State Cowgirls battled to a 2-2 draw through 110 minutes of play Friday evening at a raucous Ellis Field. The announced attendance for the annual Fish Camp Game was 4,614.
The Aggies owned overwhelming advantages in the offensive numbers for the match including shots (28-9), shots-on-goal (10-3) and corner kicks (9-3), but Oklahoma State goalkeeper Michela Ongaro made eight saves to neutralize the contest.
Oklahoma State broke the scoring seal in the 18th minute when Marlo Zoller sent a cross into the six-yard box from left of the penalty box and a sliding Texas A&M defender knocked it into the net for an own goal.
Grace Piper notched an equalizer for the Aggies in the 25th minute. Following a corner kick from the right side, the ball was played back out to Cienna Arrieta near the left corner of the penalty box. Arrieta sent an offering to the far post where Grace Piper got her head on the ball for her second goal of the season.
The 1-1 score at the intermission cloaked the Aggies' advantage in the offensive stats in the opening stanza. The Maroon and White held the edge in shots (12-2), shots-on-goal (6-2) and corner kicks (6-1).
Texas A&M took the lead in the 83rd minute. Stephanie Malherbe put on a technical clinic entering the penalty box from the left corner. She carved up a pair of defenders with poetic footwork before roofing a shot from eight yards out for the 2-1 lead.
The Cowgirls bounced back just over three minutes later to net the game-tying goal. Haley Woodard and Anna Beffer worked a give-and-go on the left side of the penalty box with Woodard uncorking the shot from 10 yards to send the match to overtime.
The Aggies' best chance to score in extra time came during the countdown of the last 10 seconds of the second OT period when Haley Pounds split a pair of defenders down the inside left channel and had launched a shot from the PK spot that Ongaro stonewalled and the clock expired for the draw.
Texas A&M returns to action Sunday when they host the DePaul Blue Demons in a 1:30 pm contest at Ellis Field.

"I think we played well enough that we should have won. Oklahoma State played incredibly tough. I thought that they made some great defensive plays in the final 18 yards. I thought up until the final 18 yards we looked really, really good. But I was proud of our players. They came from behind to take the lead. It was disappointing the way we let them back in it at the end. But we ran out of time more than anything. We didn't finish 25 of our chances. We have to do that better because we certainly are creating a lot of chances."
On Oklahoma State...
"Oklahoma State is going to win a lot of games. Colin (Carmichael) and his staff are going to win a lot of games and be really difficult for a lot of teams. Oklahoma State scored two goals the way they score goals. They are very good on the flanks. They are big and strong and it took us a little while to get used to."
On the crowd...
"The 12th Man was great tonight. I don't know how many fans were here, but the stands were packed and they were loud and really into the action. It's a great atmosphere for soccer that no else in the nation has."
