No. 3 Texas A&M drops 11-7 decision to No. 2 Auburn
Feb 17, 2018 | Equestrian
AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 3 Texas A&M equestrian team fell to No. 2 Auburn, 11-7, Saturday at the Auburn University Horse Center.
"I still think the biggest thing that it comes down to is consistency. It was a high-pressure situation, and we still made some costly mistakes, which we just can't do when you come to Auburn's territory," head Coach Tana McKay said. "It's where you go from here. We know it's always going to be tough coming here, and we ended up going into the last event 8-7. I'm still proud of them for keeping the cap on Auburn. It still is a work in progress all season long. We just need to do our homework and keep getting better every day by learning from our mistakes. We need to keep pressing forward."
The Aggies (8-4, 3-2 SEC) fell behind early, 4-1, after the Tigers took the day's first event, Equitation on the Flat. Rebekah Chenelle tallied the lone point for Texas A&M, defeating Caitlin Creel, 65-62.
The Maroon & White rallied back in Horsemanship to tie the meet, 5-5, at the halfway point. Bailey Cook opened the event, edging out Kara Kaufmann, 74-73.5, before Alex Albright bettered Taylor Searles, 73-67.5. The Aggies earned the final two points with Ashley Davidson leading the way by outscoring Kelsey Jung, 74.5-72. Avery Ellis concluded the event with the highest scoring ride of the day to top Deanna Green, 75.5-72.5, to even the score, while earning A&M's sole MOP honor.
Auburn (6-3, 3-2 SEC) took a slight 8-7 advantage after taking Equitation over Fences, 3-2. The Aggies scored the last two points to bring the score within one. Caroline Dance downed Hayley Iannotti, 84-75, prior to Rachael Hake defeating Alex Ladove, 81-77.
The Tigers won the final event of the day, Reining, 3-0 to close to meet, 11-7. Kalee McCann tied Terri June Granger at 60, before Courtney Yohey earned a 64 to draw with Blair McFarlin.
The Aggies return home to take on Baylor on Saturday, Feb. 24. The meet will begin at 10:00 A.M. at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
