COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M women's tennis team opens Southeastern Conference play on Friday as the Aggies play host to the hottest team in the league, the 17th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, who at 12-0 are the only undefeated team in the league.
First serve is at 5 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

"We are looking forward to our opening match of SEC paly with Tennessee on Friday as we head into chapter two of the season," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Tennessee has had a very good start to the season, and it will be a great opportunity for our team playing against a highly ranked team on our home courts. Coach Szabo and I couldn't be happier with how our team has been working in the practices and we are very pleased with the progress that has been made. We know that we have put ourselves in a good position to come out and play well tomorrow."
The Aggies, who tied for eighth in the SEC standings last year and are picked to finish 10th this year according to a preseason poll of the league's head women's tennis coaches, enter conference play 9-1, including 7-0 in home matches. Most recently, the Aggies played host to 28th-ranked UCF on Sunday, but inclement weather caused the match to be canceled before any of the three doubles matches were completed.
Tennessee, picked 11th in the coaches' preseason poll, is coming off a 4-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast and enters the A&M match riding the second longest win streak in program history.
A&M is led by 97th-ranked Domenica Gonzalez and freshman Riley McQuaid, who are both 10-0 in singles in dual matches. McQuaid also is undefeated in doubles, boasting a 4-0 record in dual matches with freshman partner Dorthea Faa-Hviding, who won the last singles match standing to clinch the Aggies' come-from-behind victory at TCU on February 18, A&M most recent completed match. Since starting dual match play, the Aggies are a combined 48-11 (.814) in singles and 12-3 (.800) in doubles.
Volunteers' sophomore Gabby Schuck is 10-0 in singles, and freshman Kaitlin Staines also is undefeated with an 8-0 record. In addition, Staines and sophomore partner Ariadna Riley are 9-0 in doubles, including 8-0 at the No. 2 line, and are ranked 56th in the nation.
Tennessee is under the direction of second-year head coach Alison Ojeda. The San Antonio native and former Tennessee All-American served as an assistant coach at Texas A&M in 2003 and 2004 under former head coach Bobby Kleinecke and helped the Aggies to record-setting seasons. The Aggies won the Big 12 Conference regular season title in 2003 and the Big 12 Tournament championship in 2004 and went on to make their first-ever appearance in the round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Championship.
A&M holds a narrow 7-6 lead in the all-time series against Tennessee, and the series is tied 3-3 in matches played in College Station. The Aggies, however, are a perfect 4-0 against the Volunteers since joining the SEC in 2012-13. Last year, 21st-ranked A&M shut out 23rd-ranked Tennessee, 4-0, in Knoxville.
A&M returns to the Mitchell Tennis Center on Sunday to play host to SEC preseason-favorite and 10th-ranked Georgia. Last year, A&M picked up its highest ranked victory in program history and its first-ever win against the then-No. 2 Bulldogs with a 4-2 triumph in Athens to close out the regular season. First serve against the Bulldogs is slated for 12 p.m., and the first 100 fans will receive free popcorn.
