Women's Tennis Falls to No. 22 Florida, 4-0
Mar 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla – The Texas A&M women's tennis team concluded its first Southeastern Conference road swing with a 4-0 loss at defending national champion and 22nd-ranked Florida today at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex.
"We definitely had our chances to win the doubles point, and I feel that we let that affect us too much going into the singles," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "We started out very slow in five of the singles matches, and we were never able to catch up. We have a six-match home stand in front of us, and it is important that we bounce back strong."
The Aggies, playing their fourth consecutive match against a Top-25 opponent, fall to 10-4 overall and 1-3 in SEC matches. Florida extended its win streak to five and improves to 9-4 overall, including 4-0 in SEC matches as well as 4-0 in home matches.
Florida built an early edge in doubles as 15th-ranked Anna Danilina and Victoria Emma defeated A&M's Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma, 6-2 at the No. 1 line. The remaining two matches went down to the wire and ended nearly simultaneously, as match point was being contested concurrently on both courts. The No. 3 line came down to a tiebreaker, with Florida's Katie Kubicz and Peggy Porter pulling away for a 7-6 (4) victory over A&M's Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Riley McQuaid. In a bang-bang finish, Florida's McCartney Kessler and Josie Kuhlman then won a no-ad point to close out a 7-5 victory over A&M's Iulia Ivascu and Tatiana Makarova at the No. 2 line to give Florida a 1-0 lead.
The Gators carried the momentum into singles play and cruised to first-set wins on five courts. Those matches were deep into the second set before McQuaid pulled off A&M's only first-set win, battling to an 8-6 tiebreaker victory against Porter at the No. 5 line.
Kuhlman, No. 45 in singles, gave the Gators a 2-0 lead by completing a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Macarena Olivares at the No. 2 line. Gonzalez then saw her 13-match win streak and her perfect 11-0 record in dual matches go by the wayside after suffering a 6-2, 6-1 setback to 15th-ranked Danilina at the No. 1 line as Florida built a 3-0 lead.
Kessler secured the victory for Florida with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Makarova at No. 4.
Emma, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week and ranked No. 100, held a 6-1, 5-2 lead over Paalma at No. 3 when Kessler clinched, and the match went unfinished. Faa-Hviding had dropped her opening set to Kubicz, 6-3, at No. 6, but held a 5-4 lead in the second set, and Porter had just taken the first set over McQuaid in the second set when play was stopped.
The Aggies begin their six-home stand on Thursday, playing host to Missouri at 3 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. It is part of a doubleheader with the Aggie men's tennis team, which plays host to No. 19 Notre Dame at 6 p.m.
General admission to all regular-season men's and women's home matches is free.
