COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M women's tennis team aims to give Mark Weaver the 50th victory of his three-year head coaching career when the Aggies play host to 25th-ranked Mississippi State on Friday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. First serve against the Bulldogs is at 5 p.m.
General admission is free, and the first 25 A&M students in attendance will receive a free maroon Adidas shirt. In addition, Double Dave's pizza rolls will be given away while supplies last.
"Both teams are playing very good tennis at the moment, and it should be a great college tennis match," Weaver said. "Mississippi State has won its last five matches and we have won our last four matches, so I expect it to be nothing less than a battle to the end."
The Aggies (14-4, 4-3 SEC) have won their last four matches and enter their final home weekend of the season tied with Auburn for sixth place in the SEC standings. Last week, A&M blanked Lamar, 7-0, in a non-conference match on Wednesday and handed LSU a crucial 4-1 defeat on Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center to improve to 12-1 in home matches.
A&M is led by senior and 119th-ranked Domenica Gonzalez, who is 14-1 in singles dual matches, all at the No. 1 line. Freshman Riley McQuaid is 11-1, having seen action at the No. 4 line, where she is 7-0, as well as the No. 5 court, and senior Macarena Olivares is 13-4 in dual matches, all at No. 2. In addition, freshman Dorthea Faa-Hviding has won her last four matches to improve to a team-leading 4-2 in SEC matches only.
In doubles, the Aggies have won the point in three of the last four matches.
Mississippi State (14-5, 5-3 SEC) opened conference play with losses to South Carolina and Florida, the top two teams in the league, as well as a loss at No 18 Auburn but has since rebounded by winning its last five matches to improve to 5-3 in SEC matches and move into fifth place in the standings. Two of the wins in the streak include a 4-3 victory against No. 2 Vanderbilt on March 15 to mark the Commodores' only loss in conference play, and a 4-0 win against then-No. 14 Kentucky. Last weekend, the Bulldogs continued their winning streak and began a four-match road swing by defeating Missouri, 4-1, and No. 46 Arkansas, 4-3, to improve to 4-1 in road matches.
Individually, Anastasia Rentouli is riding a team-best six-match win streak in singles and leads the Bulldogs with an 11-2 record in dual matches, including 6-1 in SEC matches only.
A&M is 6-1 against Mississippi State since the teams first met in 1989. The Aggies, 4-0 against the Bulldogs in matches played in College Station, will be looking to avenge their only loss in the series, suffered in the most recent meeting, a 4-1 Bulldog victory last year in Starkville, Mississippi.
The Aggies conclude their home schedule and celebrate Senior Day on Easter Sunday as A&M plays host to No. 10 Ole Miss at 12 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center. Seniors Domenica Gonzalez, Eva Paalma and Macarena Olivares will be honored. General admission is free, and Aggie sunglasses will be given to the first 50 fans in attendance.
