Aggies Come Up Short with Late Rallies as Mississippi State Evens Series
Apr 28, 2018 | Baseball
Mississippi State evened the three-game series with the win. The Aggies dropped to 31-12 overall and 10-10 in the SEC. The Bulldogs improved to 24-20 overall and 9-11 in league play.
The Aggies pounded out 11 hits, but they were digging out of a deep deficit for much of the last six frames. Michael Helman batted 2-for-5 with a three-run home run. George Janca was 3-for-4 with one run.
It was a tough luck loss for John Doxakis (6-2) who was pitching well until he took a sharp grounder off his pitching hand early in the third frame. He allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out three in 3.0 innings. Christian Roa, Chandler Jozwiak and Landon Miner each pitched 1.0 scoreless frame in relief.

SCORING SUMMARY
B3 | The Aggies' inability to turn an inning-ending double play lead to a huge frame for the Bulldogs. With one out, Jake Mangum beat Doxakis to first to beat out a grounder to Andritsos for a single. Rowdey Jordan followed by snaking a single through the left side of the infield. Luke Alexander chopped a grounder to third where George Janca gloved and threw to second for the second out, but Helman's attempt to turn the double play bounced wide of Andritsos at the bag, allowing two runs to score. With the gate open, Mississippi State added a two-run double by Justin Foscue, an RBI double by Elijah MacNamee and an RBI single by Marshall Gilbert. MSU 6, A&M 0.
B4 | Mississippi State tacked on two more runs with an RBI groundout by Tanner Allen and an RBI bunt single by Hunter Stovall. MSU 8, A&M 0.
T5 | Texas A&M broke through with three runs in the fifth. Janca started the inning by driving a single through the left side of the infield and Chandler Morris gapped a single to right-center to put runners on the corners. With one out, Michael Helman launched an 0-1 offering over the fence down the rightfield line for his sixth home run of the season. MSU 8, A&M 3.
T7 | The Aggies continued the comeback attempt with another crooked number. Cam Blake reached on a leadoff, pinch-hit single to short and moved to second on a wild pitch. Blake came around to score on Zach DeLoach's double to the warning track in right-center. A single to centerfield by Helman and a pinch-hit walk by Aaron Walters filled the bags with Ags. DeLoach scored on a double play grounder by Braden Shewmake that replay failed to overturn. MSU 8, A&M 5.
B7 | MacNamee greeted Sherrod by rattling a double into the corner down the rightfield line and Gilbert followed with a walk. Anthrowing error by Sherrod on a sac bunt attempt by Hatcher scored MacNamee and put Gilbert on third. Mangum plated Gilbert with a double and Hatcher came home on a wild pitch thrown by Chandler Jozwiak. MSU 11, A&M 5.
T9 | The Aggies scratched out a run in their last raps. Walters hit a wall-banger to leftfield for a one-out double, moved to third on a groundout by Shewmake and scored on an error by the Bulldogs' second baseman on a grounder by Coleman. MSU 11, A&M 6.
