Match Preview: No. 9 Santa Clara
Sep 01, 2018 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 8 Texas A&M Aggies look to start 6-0-0 for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 1999 when they host the No. 9 Santa Clara Broncos in a Top 10 clash Sunday evening at Ellis Field. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
Texas A&M is riding high after starting with four consecutive shutouts to start the season followed by Friday's second-half explosion to topple Oklahoma, 3-1. The Maroon & White boast a school-record 20-match unbeaten streak with their last loss coming at Auburn (0-1) on September 15, 2017.
The match features two of the all-time winningest coaches in NCAA Division I annals with Santa Clara's Jerry Smith ranked third (469) and Aggie skipper G Guerrieri ranked fourth (446).
Junior forward Ally Watt has scored in each of the last four matches, accounting for five goals over the span. With a tally against Santa Clara, Watt would be the first Aggie to score in five consecutive matches since Ashlee Pistorius in 2007. Pistorius also had a five-game goal streak in 2006. The Aggies' school record is seven matches by Linsey Woodward in 2002 and Bryn Blalack in 1995. Recent Aggies to score in four consecutive matches include Shea Groom twice in 2014, Allie Bailey in 2013 and Kelley Monogue in 2011.
Offensively Texas A&M is experiencing the best of both worlds. Not only do they have a "go-to" player in Watt, but they have balanced attack with nine players scoring goals in the first five games. The Maroon & White have outscored opponents 15-1 on the year.
The Aggies are 0-2 all-time against Santa Clara. In both matches, the Broncos entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the nation. In 1998, Santa Clara bested Texas A&M 3-0 in College Station. In 2006, the Broncos blanked the Aggies 2006 at the UCLA Women's Cup in Los Angeles.
Santa Clara is off to a 4-0-0 start, outscoring opponents 9-2. The Broncos have wins against San Jose State (2-1), California (4-1), North Texas (1-0) and Kansas State (2-0). Santa Clara has won 13 of their last 14 matches.
The contest will be available for viewing on SEC Network+ with David Ellis handling play-by-play and Jeff Given providing color analysis. SECNetwork+ provides events to SEC Network subscribers through WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). The game will also air on 102.7 The Zone locally and RadioAggieland.com worldwide.
